A – Anticipation (Engage learners):

Starter Question: "What’s the difference between ‘look over’ and ‘look for’? How many phrasal verbs can you form with ‘look’?"

Class Discussion: List several phrasal verbs with the base verb "look" on the board:

  • look over
  • look out
  • look up to
  • look into

Let learners guess their meanings before revealing the correct definitions.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

Examples and Meanings:

  • Look over – review: I looked over your assignment and made some corrections.
  • Look out – be careful: Look out! There’s a snake in the grass.
  • Look up to – admire: I look up to my father.

Class Exercise: Write the meaning of the following phrasal verbs:

  • come up with
  • get away with
  • run into
  • stand by
  • fall apart

Write one sentence for each showing correct use.

  1. Common Usage Mistakes (Expanded):

Incorrect vs. Correct Examples:

  • Incorrect: She don’t know the answer.
    Correct: She doesn’t know the answer.
  • Incorrect: He did a mistake.
    Correct: He made a mistake.
  • Incorrect: I am interesting in football.
    Correct: I am interested in football.

Correction Practice: Provide this paragraph:

"She don’t like running and prefer walking. He did a mistake by saying their going to school."

Ask students to correct the errors.

  1. WASSCE Grammar Review:

Distribute multiple choice grammar items from previous WASSCE papers. Sample:

  1. Choose the correct sentence: a) He don’t like sugar.
    b) He doesn’t likes sugar.
    c) He doesn’t like sugar.
    d) He isn’t like sugar.

Answer: c) He doesn’t like sugar.

Activity: Students in groups answer 10 multiple-choice grammar questions and explain their choices to the class.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Discussion Prompt: “Why do students often make the same grammar mistakes? How can we avoid them?”

Class Assignment: Write 8 correct sentences correcting the following wrong ones:

  2. She do her homework daily.
  3. They was playing football.
  4. It don’t matter.

Oral Practice: In pairs, students take turns correcting each other’s speech using a prompt: "Correct my grammar if I’m wrong."
