  • Provide five short sentence-like groups of words and ask students to decide whether each is a phrase, a clause, or a full sentence.

  1. Types of Phrases

Mini-Lesson:

  • Define and explain:
    • Noun phrase: The bright red car
    • Verb phrase: was walking slowly
    • Adjective phrase: full of energy
    • Adverb phrase: in the morning
    • Prepositional phrase: under the bridge

Practice Task:

  • Identify types of phrases from a paragraph.
  • Underline phrases and label them.

Group Exercise:

  • Construct sentences using assigned phrase types and read aloud.

Mini-Lesson:

  • Independent Clause: She sang beautifully.
  • Dependent Clause: Although she was nervous.
  • Types of dependent clauses:
    • Adverbial (e.g., because he tried)
    • Adjective/Relative (e.g., who lived nearby)
    • Noun (e.g., what he said was true)

Identification Task:

  • Label clauses in a complex passage.

Pair Activity:

  • Match clause types to definitions and create example sentences.

Writing Task:

  • Students write a short story (120–150 words) that includes:
    • At least 3 different phrase types
    • At least 3 different clause types
    • Proper punctuation
