  3. Demonstrate proficiency in summarizing passages using correct grammar.

 

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • What are the perfect tenses you’ve learned so far?
  • Can you explain the difference between “I have been reading” and “I had read”?

Interactive Prompt: Show a chart with the six perfect and perfect progressive tenses (Present Perfect, Past Perfect, Future Perfect, Present Perfect Progressive, Past Perfect Progressive, Future Perfect Progressive). Ask students to match examples to each.

  • Fill in the blanks with the correct perfect or perfect progressive tense:

  3. She _______ (complete) the task by the time we return.
  4. Summary Writing Technique:
  • Definition: Condensing a passage while retaining the original meaning.
  • Key skills: Identify main ideas, omit supporting details, use your own words.

Practice: Provide a 2-paragraph informational text. Students will write a summary in 5–6 sentences, using at least 3 perfect or perfect progressive verb forms.

  • Choose one of the following prompts:
  1. Describe your academic progress this term using perfect and perfect progressive tenses.
  2. Summarize a short article read in class.

Peer Review:

  • Learners swap their summaries and check each other’s use of correct verb tenses.

Assignment:

  1. Write a summary of your weekend activities (minimum 10 sentences), making sure to use at least 5 different perfect or perfect progressive tenses.
  2. Underline and label each verb phrase.
