Topic: Verb Usage – Part I

Sub-topic: Perfect Tenses – Present Perfect and Present Perfect Progressive

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define and differentiate between the present perfect and present perfect progressive tenses.
  2. Use the tenses correctly in speaking and writing.
  3. Construct sentences applying the appropriate perfect tenses.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • What is the difference between saying “I worked” and “I have worked”?
  • Can we say “I have been working all day”? What does that mean?

Think-Pair-Share Activity: Students pair up and compare these two:

  1. She has lived in Monrovia since 2010.
  2. She lived in Monrovia in 2010.

Each pair identifies the differences in time implication.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Present Perfect Tense: Structure: has/have + past participle
  • Used to show an action that occurred at an unspecified time in the past and may still be relevant.
  • Example: I have completed the assignment.
  1. Present Perfect Progressive Tense: Structure: has/have been + present participle (-ing)
  • Describes actions that began in the past and are still ongoing or have recently stopped.
  • Example: They have been studying for three hours.

Compare and Contrast Table:

Examples for Guided Practice: Complete the sentences with the correct tense:

  1. I ______ (finish) reading the novel.
  2. He ______ (work) on the farm since morning.
  3. We ______ (not/see) that movie before.
  4. The children ______ (play) football all day.

Error Correction:

  • Incorrect: She have gone to school.
  • Correct: She has gone to school.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Class Activity:

  • Students rewrite 5 past simple sentences into present perfect and present perfect progressive. Example:
    • Past: He washed the car.
    • Present Perfect: He has washed the car.
    • Present Perfect Progressive: He has been washing the car.

Group Work:

  • In groups of 4, write a dialogue between two friends using at least 3 examples of each tense.

Assignment:

  1. Write a short paragraph (8–10 lines) describing what you have been doing to prepare for graduation using present perfect and present perfect progressive.
  2. Underline all verbs and identify the tense used.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were students able to use both tenses in context?
  • Did learners understand the time frame implications of each tense?
  • What aspect requires re-teaching in Week 3?
