Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define and distinguish between past perfect and past perfect progressive tenses.
  2. Apply these tenses correctly in oral and written communication.
  3. Construct and analyze sentences using the tenses.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • Which action comes first: “I had eaten” or “I ate”?
  • What’s the difference between “He had worked all day” and “He worked all day”?

Activity: Display this sentence: When I arrived, the bus had left. Ask learners to describe what happened first and why.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Past Perfect Tense
    Structure: had + past participle

  • Example: I had eaten before they arrived.
  1. Past Perfect Progressive Tense
    Structure: had been + verb-ing
  • Emphasizes the duration of an action that was ongoing before another past action.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Group Activity:

  • Create a short story using at least three examples of past perfect and two examples of past perfect progressive.

Pair Practice:

  • In pairs, students ask and answer questions using both tenses: e.g. What had you done before the test began?

Assignment:

  1. Write a narrative paragraph (10–12 lines) about a time you were late for something. Use both tenses to describe actions.
  2. Highlight all the verbs and indicate the tense.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Could learners correctly identify which past action happened first?
  • Did they use both tenses meaningfully and with proper structure?
  • What learning gaps still exist?
