Week 22
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 22, Period 4
Topic: Liberia
Sub-topic: Population and Settlement Patterns

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Compare the settlement patterns of Liberia.
  2. Explain factors influencing population distribution.
  3. Analyze demographic trends and urbanization.

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Geography of Liberia (relief, drainage, climate, soils, vegetation)
  • Basic concepts of population and settlement patterns

Instructional Materials

  • Textbook: Senior Secondary Geography Textbook
  • Teaching aids: Population density maps, charts showing urbanization, photographs of settlement types
  • Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Teacher asks:
    • “Can you identify major towns or cities in Liberia?”
    • “Have you noticed differences between urban and rural settlements?”
  • Record responses on the board.

Teacher’s Role: Facilitate discussion, highlight urban vs rural differences.

Learner’s Role:

  • Share observations about settlements.
  • Engage in brainstorming and respond verbally.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  1. Population Distribution:
    • Explain population distribution: concentration in urban areas vs sparsely populated rural areas.
    • Show population density maps.
  2. Settlement Patterns:
    • Describe linear settlements (along roads/rivers), nucleated settlements (central village/town), and dispersed settlements (scattered houses in rural areas).
    • Illustrate with diagrams and photos.
  3. Factors Influencing Population and Settlement:
    • Physical factors: relief, soil fertility, climate, water supply.
    • Human factors: employment, infrastructure, historical/cultural reasons.
    • Discuss urbanization trends, migration, and population growth.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Label different settlement types on provided maps.
  • Compare urban and rural population densities in pairs.
  • Discuss in groups why people move to cities.

Assessment Checks:

  • Quick questions: “Name one factor influencing rural settlements.”
  • Short mapping exercise: Identify linear, nucleated, and dispersed settlements on a map of Liberia.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Linear settlements: Follow roads, rivers; common in coastal and valley regions.
  • Nucleated settlements: Clustered around markets or resources; found in central towns.
  • Dispersed settlements: Scattered houses; common in agricultural areas.
  • Population factors: Relief, climate, water availability, fertile land, employment, transport, culture.
  • Urbanization: Rapid growth of cities due to migration and industrial opportunities.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:

  • Recap settlement patterns and population distribution.
  • Highlight factors influencing settlements.
  • Ask students: “Why do cities grow faster than rural areas?”

Evaluation Method (Expanded):

  • Exit slip: “Identify two types of settlement patterns and one factor influencing population distribution.”
  • Teacher reviews responses for understanding.

Assignment (Expanded):

  • Research and write a short report on the population trend in Monrovia over the last 20 years.
  • Draw diagrams showing the three main settlement patterns in Liberia.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:

  • Struggling Learners: Use partially labeled maps for practice.
  • Advanced Learners: Analyze demographic trends and urban growth implications.
  • Students with Disabilities: Provide visual aids and tactile maps.
