Date: Week 26
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 26, Period V
Topic: Primary Industries of Liberia
Sub-topic: Fishing and Trade/Commerce

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the role of fishing in Liberia’s economy.
  2. Describe trade patterns and commerce.
  3. Analyze challenges facing these industries.

Previous Knowledge Students already know:
• Basic understanding of economic sectors (primary, secondary, tertiary)
• Examples of local industries

Instructional Materials:
• Textbook: Geography of Liberia
• Teaching aids: maps, images of fishing activities, videos of trade and markets
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:
• Teacher asks: “How do rivers, coasts, and transport networks influence economic activities?”
• Students discuss in pairs and provide examples.
• Teacher records responses on the board.

Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion, correct misconceptions, and highlight key points.
Learner’s Role: Share ideas, respond verbally, and participate actively.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  1. Define Key Concepts:
    • Fishing Industry: Economic activity involving the catching of fish and other aquatic organisms for food and commerce. It includes inland (river and lake) fishing and marine (coastal) fishing.
    • Trade: The buying and selling of goods and services, including local (internal) trade and international trade (exports and imports).
    • Commerce: All activities related to the exchange of goods and services, including marketing, transport, and banking services.
  2. Explain in Detail:
    • Fishing Industry:
      • Inland Fishing: Takes place in rivers such as Saint Paul, Saint John, and Cavalla. Fish species include tilapia, catfish, and perch. Fishing provides food for local communities and creates employment.
      • Marine Fishing: Occurs along Liberia’s Atlantic coast. Fish products are exported to international markets. Coastal fishing supports commercial fishing companies and small-scale fishers.
      • Economic Importance: Provides income, employment, and food security. Contributes to Liberia’s GDP.
      • Challenges: Overfishing, inadequate storage and processing facilities, limited access to capital, and poor transport infrastructure.
    • Trade and Commerce:
      • Internal Trade: Movement of goods within Liberia. Markets such as Red Light Market in Monrovia are key hubs.
      • External Trade: Includes export of commodities like rubber, palm oil, and fish; import of machinery, consumer goods, and fuel.
      • Role of Transport: Roads, rivers, and ports facilitate trade. Poor infrastructure can restrict trade flow.
      • Commercial Centers: Monrovia, Buchanan, and other urban centers serve as trade hubs.
      • Challenges: Poor infrastructure, limited capital, high transport costs, and fluctuating international prices.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Take detailed notes, highlighting key terms and definitions.
• Engage in Q&A: identify inland rivers and coastal fishing zones.
• Work in small groups to plot major fishing zones and trade routes on a blank map of Liberia.
• Discuss in groups the challenges facing the fishing industry and trade.

Assessment Checks:
• Ask students to define fishing, trade, and commerce.
• Have learners identify two major rivers used for fishing and two major trade centers.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  1. Fishing Industry:
    • Inland Rivers: Saint Paul, Saint John, Cavalla
    • Major Fish Species: tilapia, catfish, perch
    • Economic Role: Employment, food security, local and international trade
    • Challenges: Overfishing, storage, transport
  2. Trade & Commerce:
    • Internal Trade: Markets, trading routes
    • External Trade: Exports (rubber, fish), Imports (machinery, consumer goods)
    • Commercial Centers: Monrovia, Buchanan, Greenville
    • Challenges: Poor roads, limited capital, high costs

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher asks students to recall major rivers for fishing, trade hubs, and challenges of these industries.
• Group activity: list three ways fishing supports local communities (employment, food, income).

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip:

  1. Name two major rivers used for fishing in Liberia.
  2. Mention one challenge facing trade in Liberia.
Teacher reviews responses and provides feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
• Write a 1–2 page essay on trade and commerce trends in Liberia, including major products, markets, and challenges.

Follow-up Activity:
• Research one fishing cooperative or trade hub in Liberia and present findings next class.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Struggling Learners: Use diagrams, maps, and labeled images of rivers, fishing zones, and trade centers.
Advanced Learners: Analyze economic impact of fishing and trade on Liberia’s GDP.
Students with Disabilities: Provide audio descriptions, peer support during map activity, and large-print materials.

Teacher’s Reflection (After Class):
• What worked well? ____________________________________________
• What needs improvement? _____________________________________
• Students’ engagement level: □ High □ Medium □ Low
• Next steps: Reinforce link between primary industries and Liberia’s economic development next week (transport, development, tourism).
