Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Liberia’s participation in the League of Nations and United Nations (Week 10).
  • Its relations with Europe and the USA (Week 9).
  • How foreign policy is formulated and executed (Week 8).

Instructional Materials

  • Map of Africa showing AU, ECOWAS, and Mano River Union members
  • Timeline chart (1963 OAU, 1975 ECOWAS, 2002 AU, 1973 MRU)
  • Handouts with speeches from Liberian leaders (e.g., William Tubman, William Tolbert, Samuel Doe)
  • Video clips or images of ECOMOG operations in Liberia
  • Chalkboard/Whiteboard

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Starter)

Time: 5 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  • Ask:
  1. “Why do African countries form unions and organizations instead of standing alone?”
  2. “How do you think Liberia has contributed to unity in Africa?”

Learners’ Role:

  • Share ideas: (“to fight colonialism,” “for unity,” “to stop wars,” “to trade easily”).
  • Teacher links responses to the day’s lesson.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  • Teach in three sections (OAU/AU, ECOWAS/ECOMOG, MRU).
  • Provide examples of Liberia’s leadership and involvement.
  • Use group tasks and discussions.

Learners’ Role:

  • Take guided notes.
  • Engage in Q&A.
  • Group task: Compare Liberia’s contributions to the OAU and ECOWAS.

Detailed Notes

  1. Liberia & the OAU/AU
  • Liberia was one of the founding members of the OAU (1963, Addis Ababa).
  • President William Tubman played a major role in uniting the Casablanca and Monrovia blocs of African leaders.
  • The OAU promoted independence, anti-colonial struggles, and unity.
  • In 2002, the OAU transformed into the African Union (AU).
  • Liberia has remained active, advocating African solidarity and peace.
  1. Liberia & ECOWAS/ECOMOG
  • Liberia was a founding member of ECOWAS (1975).
  • ECOWAS promotes trade, free movement, and regional integration.
  • During Liberia’s civil war (1990–1997, 1999–2003), ECOWAS created ECOMOG, a peacekeeping force.
  • ECOMOG, made up of West African soldiers, intervened to stop fighting and stabilize Liberia.
  • Though controversial, it prevented total collapse and paved the way for peace agreements.
  1. Liberia & Mano River Union (MRU)
  • Founded in 1973 between Liberia and Sierra Leone; Guinea joined in 1980.
  • Aim: economic cooperation, infrastructure, and regional peace.
  • During Liberia’s civil wars, the MRU was weakened but later revived to promote peace and trade.
  • Today, MRU helps with cross-border cooperation and development.

Impact of African/Regional Organizations on Liberia

  • Positive: strengthened Liberia’s leadership role in Africa, provided peacekeeping (ECOMOG), promoted trade and unity.
  • Negative: heavy external influence in Liberia’s domestic affairs; MRU weakened during wars.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Evaluation)

Time: 7–8 minutes

Summary (Teacher):

  • Liberia played a pioneering role in founding African unity movements (OAU, AU).
  • ECOWAS and its military wing, ECOMOG, were vital in Liberia’s civil war peace process.
  • The Mano River Union reflects Liberia’s cooperation with its closest neighbors.
  • These organizations have shaped Liberia’s foreign policy and internal stability.

Evaluation (Oral Questions):

  1. When was the OAU formed and what was Liberia’s role?
  2. What is ECOWAS and what special role did it play in Liberia?
  3. What countries are in the Mano River Union?
  4. Mention one benefit and one challenge Liberia faced in its participation in these African bodies.

Assignment

  1. Short Notes:
Liberia’s role in founding the OAU (1963)
ii. ECOWAS and the ECOMOG intervention in Liberia
iii. Mano River Union (formation and aims)
  2. Essay (1½ pages): “ECOWAS and ECOMOG played the most decisive role in Liberia’s survival during the civil war.” Discuss.
  3. Research: Find two examples of how Liberia benefited economically from regional cooperation.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Struggling learners: Simplified map labeling activity of regional organizations.
  • Advanced learners: Debate: “Was ECOMOG an African solution to an African problem, or outside interference?”
  • Learners with disabilities: Provide simplified notes, reading support, and inclusive group roles.
