Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Activity:

  • Teacher asks:
  1. “If your neighbors are fighting and you want peace, what can you do to stop the fight?”
  2. “Do you think other African countries should interfere in Liberia’s civil war? Why or why not?”
  • Teacher records answers under two headings: Peaceful Efforts and Armed Intervention.

Teacher’s Role:

  • Lead brainstorming session to link “neighbors helping neighbors” with ECOWAS’s intervention in Liberia.

Learners’ Role:

  • Share ideas on conflict resolution.
  • Engage in the discussion actively.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes**

Teacher’s Role

Assessment Checks:

  • Oral Q&A after each section.
  • Teacher circulates to check students’ group tables for accuracy.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  1. Role of ECOWAS
  • First major regional intervention in West Africa.
  • Diplomacy & Peace Accords: Brokered multiple peace agreements (Banjul 1990, Yamoussoukro 1991, Cotonou 1993, Abuja 1995/96).
  • ECOMOG (ECOWAS Ceasefire Monitoring Group): Military intervention force deployed in 1990; secured Monrovia; protected civilians; tried to enforce ceasefires.
  • Successes: Prevented Liberia from total collapse, protected humanitarian aid delivery, facilitated peace talks.
  • Limitations: Underfunded, accused of bias, struggled with neutrality, faced resistance from rebel groups.
  1. Interim Government of National Unity (IGN/IGNU)
  • Established in 1990 in Banjul, The Gambia after Doe’s death.
  • Headed by Dr. Amos Sawyer (a respected academic and civilian leader).
  • Mandate: Govern Liberia temporarily, restore peace, prepare for democratic elections.
  • Challenges:
    • Lack of control outside Monrovia.
    • Resistance from warlords who did not want to give up power.
    • Continued fighting despite peace accords.

  2. State two roles of ECOMOG in Liberia.
  3. Mention one challenge faced by the IGN/IGNU.

Assignment (Expanded):

  1. Write a half-page essay: “Was ECOWAS’s intervention in Liberia a success or a failure? Give reasons.”
  2. Create a two-column chart with the headings: Successes of ECOWAS and Limitations of ECOWAS. Fill in at least 3 points each.

Follow-up Activity:

  • Next lesson will examine the Liberian Transitional Governments up to 1997 (Kpormakpor, Sankawulo, and Ruth Perry Councils).

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Struggling Learners: Provide a pre-filled timeline of peace accords to complete.
  • Advanced Learners: Research ECOWAS’s role in another conflict (e.g., Sierra Leone) and compare with Liberia.
  • Students with Disabilities: Provide written summaries and oral discussions in groups for inclusion.
