- ECOMOG (ECOWAS Ceasefire Monitoring Group): Military intervention force deployed in 1990; secured Monrovia; protected civilians; tried to enforce ceasefires.
- Successes: Prevented Liberia from total collapse, protected humanitarian aid delivery, facilitated peace talks.
- Limitations: Underfunded, accused of bias, struggled with neutrality, faced resistance from rebel groups.
- Interim Government of National Unity (IGN/IGNU)
- Established in 1990 in Banjul, The Gambia after Doe’s death.
- Headed by Dr. Amos Sawyer (a respected academic and civilian leader).
- Mandate: Govern Liberia temporarily, restore peace, prepare for democratic elections.
- Challenges:
- Lack of control outside Monrovia.
- Resistance from warlords who did not want to give up power.
- Continued fighting despite peace accords.
