  1. P – Probe (5–10 min)

Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.

Activities:

  • Start with a probing question: “How would you maintain faith in the face of overwhelming challenges?”
  • Read the opening lines aloud:
“In the depths of doubt and fear,
    Where shadows linger, drawing near,
I stand firm, though trials press,
For in God's promise, I find my rest.”
  • Encourage students to predict the poem’s themes and the author’s message.

Teacher’s Role: Facilitate discussion; record students’ initial ideas about faith, perseverance, and trust.

  1. E – Explore (15–20 min)

Purpose: Engage with the text actively.

Activities:

  • Students read excerpts of the poem silently or aloud.
  • Focus on literary elements: theme, imagery, tone, symbolism, characterization.
  • Methods:
    • Think-pair-share: Analyze a stanza (e.g., Stanza IV: Resilience in Adversity) for imagery and tone.
    • Annotation: Highlight expressions of trust, hope, and divine guidance.
    • Optional dramatization: Act out a scene representing trials or obedience.

Student Activity: Annotate text, discuss symbolism and tone in pairs/groups.

  1. A – Analyze & Question (15–20 min)

Purpose: Develop critical thinking and deeper understanding.

Activities:

  • Pose higher-order questions:
    • Why does the poet repeatedly emphasize God’s faithfulness in adversity?
    • How does imagery in Stanza II: Upheld by Grace enhance the reader’s understanding of divine support?
  • Assign mini analytical tasks:
    • Identify recurring motifs (faith, grace, perseverance) and their significance.
    • Examine the narrative voice: first-person reflection and personal trust.

Teacher’s Role: Guide interpretations, scaffold thinking, and introduce literary terms like motif, tone, and imagery.

  1. R – Reflect & Relate (10–15 min)

Purpose: Connect literature to personal, social, or global contexts.

Activities:

  • Students write short reflections or discuss:
    • How can the poem’s message about perseverance inspire personal decision-making?
    • Can you relate the trials described to real-life challenges in school, community, or society?
  • Creative response options:
    • Journaling a personal story of faith amidst challenges.
    • Sketching a symbolic representation of trust in adversity.
    • Composing a short dialogue inspired by the poem.

Purpose: Consolidate learning and extend thinking beyond the lesson.

Activities:

  • Assign extension tasks:
    • Comparative essay: Compare this poem with Strength Perfected: God’s Grace in Weakness.
    • Create a social media profile for the speaker in the poem, highlighting their journey of faith.
