Lesson Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Analyze the poem’s theme of holiness, purity, and obedience to divine standards.
  2. Identify literary devices such as imagery, symbolism, repetition, and tone.
  3. Reflect on personal experiences of striving for moral and spiritual integrity.
  4. Express understanding through discussion, annotation, or creative response.

 

Lesson Structure (ABC Model)

  1. P – Probe (5–10 minutes)

Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.

  • Begin with reading Stanza I: The Whisper of Holiness.
  • Ask probing questions:
    • “What does holiness mean in daily life?”
    • “How can one embrace higher standards in a challenging world?”
    • “Which stanza’s message challenges you the most, and why?”
  • Teacher’s Role: Facilitate discussion, note ideas, and highlight emotional and spiritual reactions.

 

  1. E – Explore (15–20 minutes)

Purpose: Engage actively with the text.

  • Students read selected stanzas (I–X) or listen to an oral reading.
  • Focus on:
    • Theme: Holiness, purity, obedience, integrity, faith, legacy.
    • Characterization: The speaker’s spiritual journey and moral resolve.
    • Imagery & Symbolism: Whisper, light, fortress, surrender, celebration.
    • Tone: Reflective, instructive, reverent.
  • Methods:
    • Think-Pair-Share: Discuss one stanza and identify literary devices.
    • Annotation: Highlight motifs (holiness, purity, standards, faithfulness).
    • Dramatization: Read aloud emphasizing tone and rhythm.

Student Activity:

  • Annotate literary devices and recurring motifs.
  • Discuss in pairs how each stanza emphasizes moral and spiritual growth.

 

  1. A – Analyze & Question (15–20 minutes)

Purpose: Develop critical thinking and deeper understanding.

  • Pose higher-order questions:
    • How does the poet progress from personal striving to embracing divine standards?
    • What role does repetition play in reinforcing holiness and obedience?
    • How do metaphors like “fortress,” “legacy,” and “symphony” enhance meaning?
  • Mini Analytical Tasks:
    • Identify recurring motifs and explain significance.
    • Examine the poet’s use of imagery to convey moral and spiritual guidance.
    • Compare the poem’s message to real-life challenges of maintaining integrity and holiness.

Purpose: Connect literature to personal and social contexts.

  • Creative Response Options:
    • Journal a story of a time you adhered to moral or spiritual principles despite challenges.
    • Sketch a symbolic representation of holiness or purity.
    • Compose a dialogue inspired by the poem showing integrity in action.

 

  1. L – Link & Extend (5–10 minutes)

Purpose: Consolidate learning and extend thinking.

  • Summarize key points:
    • Holiness, obedience, and moral integrity are central to personal and spiritual growth.
    • The poet highlights the journey from personal striving to surrender and faithfulness.
    • Reflection, celebration of purity, and legacy of holiness strengthen character.
  • Assign Extension Tasks:
    • Comparative essay with another poem on holiness, virtue, or divine standards.
    • Create a social media profile for the speaker showing their journey of integrity.
    • Prepare a short oral presentation analyzing one stanza’s imagery and moral message.
