Instructional Materials:

  • Charts illustrating championship types (e.g., knockout, league, round-robin)
  • Videos showing examples of different tournament formats
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts summarizing types and formats of championships

ABC Teaching Model

A - Anticipation (Warm-Up) – 5 minutes

  • Ask: “Can you name different ways sports competitions are organized?”
  • Activity: Learners quickly list championship types they have seen or heard about (e.g., knockout, league).

B - Building Knowledge (Main Lesson) – 25 minutes

Types of Championships:

  1. Knockout (Elimination) Tournament:
    • Teams/players compete in matches where losers are immediately eliminated.
    • Advantages: Quick to complete, exciting.
    • Challenges: One loss eliminates the participant, may be less forgiving.
    • Examples: FIFA World Cup knockout stages, tennis Grand Slam rounds.
  2. League (Round Robin) Championship:
    • All teams/players play against each other over a season or series.
    • Advantages: Fair, all participants play multiple matches.
    • Challenges: Takes longer to complete.
    • Examples: English Premier League, NBA regular season.
  3. Combination (Group + Knockout) Tournament:
    • Teams compete in groups (round robin), then advance to knockout stages.
    • Advantages: Balances fairness and excitement.
    • Examples: FIFA World Cup, Olympic team sports.
  4. Challenge and Ladder Tournaments:
    • Players challenge each other for rankings; winners move up the ladder.
    • Common in individual sports and clubs.

Functions and Rules:

  • Different sports adopt formats suiting their nature and number of participants.
  • Rules ensure fairness, scheduling, and ranking clarity.

Learners’ Activities:

  • Watch video clips illustrating each tournament type.
  • Group discussion on pros and cons of each championship type.
  • Create flowcharts or diagrams illustrating tournament progressions.
  • Role-play organizing a mini championship using one of the formats.
