Sub-topic: Sounds and Sizes
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Describe animals by their sounds and sizes in French
Use sensory vocabulary for listening and speaking exercises
Participate in sound recognition games
Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Animal names, their young ones, and simple adjectives
Instructional Materials
Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 2
Animal sound recordings, flashcards, charts for size vocabulary
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
What sound does a dog make in French? How would you say it?
Learner’s Role:
Respond orally, recall animal sounds in French
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Introduce vocabulary related to animal sounds, such as “le chien aboie” (the dog barks), “le chat miaule” (the cat meows), and others relevant to the animals previously learned. Explain and demonstrate the sounds each animal makes, linking the French verbs for sounds to the specific animals. Teach size descriptors again (grand, petit) and emphasize combining these words in short sentences to describe animals. Conduct listening exercises where learners hear animal sounds and identify the corresponding animal in French. Facilitate speaking exercises where learners practice producing sentences describing both the sound and size of animals, e.g., “Le lion est grand et il rugit.” Provide clear pronunciation modeling and correct learners gently as needed.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Listen attentively to animal sounds played or imitated by the teacher. Repeat animal sound phrases and size descriptors aloud multiple times, focusing on pronunciation. Participate actively in sound recognition games, identifying which animal is making the sound. Formulate and practice short sentences describing animals’ sounds and sizes orally and in writing, e.g., “Le chien est petit et il aboie.”
Assessment Checks
Observe learners’ correct use of vocabulary related to animal sounds and sizes during oral and written exercises. Check sentence structure and pronunciation accuracy. Monitor participation in games and activities.
Peer Review
In pairs, learners exchange sentences describing animals’ sounds and sizes, providing feedback on pronunciation and sentence accuracy.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use audio-visual aids such as recorded animal sounds, pictures, and flashcards to reinforce connections between vocabulary and real-world references. Encourage learners to listen carefully and imitate sounds to enhance engagement. Link sounds to animals they have previously learned to build vocabulary integration.
Assignment (Homework)
Ask learners to write two sentences describing an animal’s sound and size in French, such as “Le cheval est grand et il hennit.” Encourage them to practice saying these sentences aloud at home to improve fluency and confidence.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Name an animal and describe its sound and size
Follow-up Activity: Pair oral game matching animals with sounds
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide visual aids for learners needing support
Challenge advanced learners to describe two attributes in one sentence
