Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you ask your partner when they were born? Can you answer in French?
Learner’s Role:
Answer orally, recall birthday vocabulary, and respond to partner questions
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin the lesson by clearly demonstrating how to ask the question “Quand es-tu né(e) ?” (When were you born?) with correct pronunciation and intonation. Emphasize the use of the informal “tu” pronoun for peers. Explain the difference between “né” for boys and “née” for girls, giving examples.
Model full responses using the birthday phrase: “Je suis né(e) le [date] [month].” Provide several sample answers with different dates and months, highlighting correct sentence structure and pronunciation.
Guide learners through partner practice, encouraging them to combine their introductions (“Je m’appelle…”) with their birthday information. For example, “Je m’appelle Marie. Je suis née le 10 avril.” Walk around to monitor and support learners as they practice, correcting pronunciation and grammar as needed.
Reinforce the vocabulary and sentence patterns through interactive calendar games where learners match dates and months, or place birthdays on a classroom calendar. Use the calendar as a visual and tactile tool to help learners internalize date vocabulary and their order.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Work in pairs to ask and answer the question “Quand es-tu né(e) ?” practicing full sentence responses with correct date format.
Combine the question and answer practice with self-introductions, saying “Je m’appelle…” plus their birthday information in French.
Engage in calendar games where they place or match dates and months, reinforcing number and month vocabulary in context.
Assessment Checks
Observe learners’ ability to ask the question accurately with proper intonation and pronunciation.
Check learners’ responses for correct use of full sentences, including the use of “le” before dates and proper month names.
Monitor the accuracy of pronunciation, especially for dates and months.
Peer Review
Encourage pairs to listen carefully to each other’s questions and answers, providing constructive feedback on pronunciation, sentence structure, and completeness of responses.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Promote the use of full sentences rather than one-word answers to build language fluency and confidence.
Use visual prompts such as calendar charts or flashcards to support comprehension, especially for months and numbers.
Repeat key phrases and sentence patterns frequently during the lesson to reinforce learning.
Assignment (Homework)
Assign learners to practice asking and answering “Quand es-tu né(e) ?” with family members or friends at home, encouraging them to use full sentences and correct date formats.
Suggest that learners try to write down the birthdays they learn from family members to bring to class for sharing or review.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Write a sentence asking your partner’s birthday and answer it
Follow-up Activity: Oral review game in class
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide sentence starters for learners needing support
Challenge advanced learners to combine multiple classmates’ birthdays in sentences
