Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
What do you usually eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?
Learner’s Role:
Answer orally, recall previous food vocabulary, and engage in discussion.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
- Introduce New Vocabulary – Meals of the Day
- Teach the three main meals in French:
- Le petit déjeuner – breakfast
- Le déjeuner – lunch
- Le dîner – dinner/supper
- Pronounce each clearly, write them on the board, and use gestures or images to indicate time of day (e.g., pretend to wake up for le petit déjeuner).
- Explain “Repas équilibré” (Balanced Meal)
- Definition: “Un repas équilibré” means a meal that contains all the food groups the body needs to stay healthy.
- Use a food pyramid or plate chart to show components:
- Les fruits – fruits
- Les légumes – vegetables
- Les céréales – grains
- Les protéines – protein (meat, fish, beans)
- Les produits laitiers – dairy products
- L’eau – water
- Use Charts and Sorting Activities
- Prepare picture cards of various foods (e.g., pain, riz, poisson, banane, œufs, lait, légumes, jus).
- Ask learners to sort them into the correct meal: petit déjeuner, déjeuner, dîner.
- Also ask them to build a “balanced plate” by choosing foods from different categories.
- Model and Guide Sentence Formation
- Give examples:
- Au petit déjeuner, je mange du pain et je bois du lait.
- Au déjeuner, je mange du riz avec du poisson.
- Au dîner, je mange des légumes et des fruits.
- Emphasize sentence structure: Au [meal], je mange [food] et je bois [drink].
- Lead Group Discussions
- Ask: Que manges-tu au petit déjeuner ?
- Discuss: Why is it important to eat vegetables? What foods give us energy?
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
- Repeat meal vocabulary after teacher.
- Participate in sorting activity using cut-out pictures or flashcards to group food items into appropriate meals.
- Use a meal plate worksheet to build a balanced meal with drawn or pasted images.
- Say sentences aloud in French about what they eat during breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- Write one example of a balanced meal using correct vocabulary and sentence structure.
- Discuss with group members what foods are good for the body and why.
Assessment Checks
- Oral questioning:
- Comment dit-on “breakfast” en français ?
- Nomme un aliment que tu manges au déjeuner.
- Written task: Learners write one sentence for each meal using je mange or je bois.
- Observe learners’ ability to:
- Correctly sort foods by meal
- Construct grammatically accurate sentences
- Verbally explain one example of a balanced meal
Peer Review
- In pairs, learners take turns asking each other:
- Qu’est-ce que tu manges au dîner ?
- Est-ce que ton repas est équilibré ?
- Each learner checks their partner’s vocabulary use, pronunciation, and sentence construction.
- Partners can also exchange their balanced meal drawings and give feedback.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
- Reinforce the pronunciation of new words (déjeuner, légumes, produits laitiers).
- Emphasize the importance of healthy eating in simple French terms.
- Use visuals and realia like food packaging or toy fruits/vegetables to enhance learning.

Extension (Optional for Fast Finishers):
