Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you recall the days of the week? Can you count past 10 in French?
Learner’s Role:
Answer orally, review previous days, and count numbers 1–20
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by introducing the twelve months of the year in French: janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre, décembre. Pronounce each month clearly and slowly, emphasizing correct French phonetics. Use repetition drills where learners repeat each month after you multiple times to build confidence and familiarity.

Incorporate engaging games, such as “Month Bingo” or “Flashcard Race,” to reinforce month names through active participation. For example, show a flashcard with a month and have learners shout the name, or call out a month and have learners find the corresponding card.

Combine the months with days by introducing simple sentences such as “Nous sommes en mars” (“We are in March”) or “Le mois de juin est chaud” (“The month of June is hot”). Explain that “en” is used to say “in” when referring to months. Model these sentences and encourage learners to repeat them.

Review numbers 11 through 31 by using number charts and oral drills. Highlight how these numbers are important for stating dates beyond the 10th day of the month. Practice counting from 11 to 31 aloud several times to enhance number recognition and pronunciation.

Link the numbers to dates on the classroom calendar, showing learners how the number corresponds to the day of the month and how the month sets the time frame.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Repeat the months aloud after the teacher, focusing on correct pronunciation and intonation. Use call-and-response drills to encourage full class participation.

Use days and months in simple oral sentences. For example, learners say “Nous sommes en avril” or “Le mois de décembre est froid,” practicing linking vocabulary words in context.

Engage in a matching activity where learners match numbers 11 to 31 with the correct day on the classroom calendar or flashcards. This reinforces their understanding of how numbers relate to dates.

Assessment Checks
Observe learners for accurate pronunciation of months and clarity in sentence construction using days and months.

Monitor learners’ ability to recognize and say numbers 11 to 31 correctly during counting and matching activities.

Peer Review
Pair learners and have them quiz each other on the names of the months and numbers from 11 to 31. One learner names a month or number, and the other responds correctly. This encourages cooperative learning and reinforcement.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Utilize interactive games and songs designed for memorizing months in French, such as “Les mois de l’année” songs with catchy tunes. Music aids memory retention and makes learning enjoyable.

Emphasize linking vocabulary — days, months, and numbers — to build a comprehensive understanding of how dates are formed and expressed in French.

Encourage learners to connect months with familiar events or seasons (e.g., “décembre” with holidays) to deepen contextual understanding.

Assignment (Homework)
Assign learners to write all the months of the year in order on paper to practice spelling and sequence.

Have them create sentences combining a month with a number from 1 to 31, such as “Le 15 mars,” or “Nous sommes le 21 avril,” practicing date formation.

Encourage learners to practice saying these sentences aloud with family members to build oral confidence outside of the classroom.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Say or write today’s day, month, and number in French
Follow-up Activity: Oral repetition game with months and numbers
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide picture prompts for learners who need support
Challenge advanced learners to write full date sentences
