Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you describe a lion or a dog in French? What words can we use?
Learner’s Role:
Listen and suggest descriptive words in French
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Introduce common French adjectives related to size and temperament such as grand (big), petit (small), méchant (mean), and gentil (kind). Explain the meaning of each adjective using pictures or real objects to illustrate size and temperament. Model simple example sentences combining animal vocabulary with these adjectives, such as “Un chien méchant” (a mean dog) and “Un chat petit” (a small cat), emphasizing correct adjective placement after the noun and pronunciation. Use repetition drills to help learners internalize the sentence structure. Facilitate short dialogues where learners describe animals using these adjectives. Organize role-play exercises where learners take turns describing animals to their peers, encouraging creativity and use of new vocabulary and adjectives. Provide corrections and praise as needed to build confidence.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Repeat the teacher’s sentences aloud several times, focusing on accurate pronunciation and adjective placement. Practice constructing their own sentences describing animals’ size and temperament using the new adjectives. Engage actively in role-play exercises, describing animals to classmates and responding to descriptions. Listen to peers and provide constructive feedback where appropriate.
Assessment Checks
Monitor learners during oral repetition and role-play to assess correct usage of adjectives and sentence structure. Check for proper adjective-noun agreement and pronunciation. Note participation and confidence in speaking.
Peer Review
In pairs, learners listen to each other’s sentences and offer feedback on adjective placement and pronunciation, fostering collaborative learning and self-correction.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use visual aids such as pictures or flashcards showing animals exhibiting different sizes and temperaments to reinforce understanding. Emphasize the rule that adjectives usually follow the noun in French and adjust for gender and number where appropriate. Encourage learners to observe animals around them and think about descriptive words to enhance vocabulary retention.
Assignment (Homework)
Ask learners to write three simple sentences describing different animals using the adjectives learned during the lesson. Encourage them to practice reading the sentences aloud at home to improve fluency and pronunciation.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Describe one animal using an adjective
Follow-up Activity: Quick oral round describing a partner’s favorite animal
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide sentence starters for learners needing support
Encourage advanced learners to describe two animals in one sentence
