Topic: Differentiating Weather and Seasons
Sub-topic: Understanding Daily Weather vs. Seasons
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: Demonstrate understanding of the difference between weather and seasons in Liberia and abroad.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know weather vocabulary, season names, and expressions about weather.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 2

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class: What is the weather today? How is it different from the season we are in?

Learner’s Role: Observe, respond, and discuss daily weather vs. seasonal trends.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by explaining the fundamental difference between weather and seasons: weather changes daily and can be sunny, rainy, or windy, while seasons are longer periods lasting several months with characteristic weather patterns. Use clear examples and visuals such as daily weather icons (sun, rain, clouds) alongside a seasonal calendar showing la saison sèche and la saison des pluies. Display charts or posters that contrast daily weather conditions with seasonal changes. Engage learners by asking them to describe today’s weather using French vocabulary (e.g., Il fait chaud, Il pleut) and to name the current season in Liberia (La saison sèche or La saison des pluies). Encourage oral responses, modeling full sentences to guide learners.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Learners participate in role-play activities where one acts as a weather reporter describing the current weather while another describes the season. They answer teacher’s questions orally about the differences between weather and seasons, using phrases like Le temps change tous les jours and La saison dure plusieurs mois. Learners complete simple written exercises that ask them to write short sentences comparing daily weather to seasonal weather in French. For example, writing Aujourd’hui, il pleut alongside Nous sommes en saison des pluies. Practice peer conversations focusing on these differences.

Assessment Checks
Observe learners during oral activities for correct usage of weather and season vocabulary and sentence structure. Review written sentences for accuracy, clarity, and appropriate vocabulary use. Note the ability to distinguish between the temporary nature of weather and the longer duration of seasons in their explanations.

Peer Review
Pairs practice describing weather and season differences to each other, listening carefully and offering feedback on pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence completeness. This peer interaction helps reinforce learning and builds confidence.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use visual charts to help learners associate specific weather types with corresponding seasons (e.g., rain with la saison des pluies). Emphasize the use of complete, simple French sentences to improve language structure and fluency. Encourage learners to connect classroom learning to their own daily observations to make learning meaningful and contextual.

Assignment (Homework)
Write three sentences in French: one describing today’s weather (e.g., Aujourd’hui, il fait chaud), one naming and describing the current season in Liberia (Nous sommes en saison sèche), and one comparing Liberia’s season to a season in another country (Au Canada, c’est l’hiver maintenant). This assignment reinforces vocabulary, sentence structure, and cross-cultural awareness.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Oral description of today’s weather vs. season.
• Follow-up Activity: Peer oral review and written sentences.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Use visuals, sentence starters, peer support, and oral repetition.
