Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you ask your friend how they are in French?
Learner’s Role:
Recall previous greetings and respond orally
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by introducing the new vocabulary words mon ami (my friend) and c’est (this is/it is). Write the words clearly on the board or display flashcards to help visual learners. Pronounce each word slowly and clearly, then have the learners repeat after you multiple times to practice correct pronunciation.

Next, teach the common French expression Comment ça va? (How are you?), followed by typical responses such as Ça va bien, merci (I’m fine, thank you). Use simple, friendly intonation to model the dialogue. Demonstrate short sample conversations, for example:
Person 1: « Bonjour! Comment ça va ? »
Person 2: « Ça va bien, merci. Et toi ? »
Person 1: « Ça va bien. »

Then, show learners how to introduce a friend using the phrase C’est mon ami (This is my friend). Model the phrase clearly and use gestures, such as pointing to a friend or a picture of two children. Emphasize the pronunciation of c’est and mon ami.

Facilitate pair role-play exercises where learners practice greeting each other, asking Comment ça va?, responding politely, and introducing a friend. Walk around the classroom to support and correct pronunciation, encouraging learners to speak confidently and politely. Use positive reinforcement and praise effort.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Learners repeat the new vocabulary and expressions aloud several times, both individually and as a group, to build confidence and fluency. In pairs, they practice short dialogues where one learner asks Comment ça va? and the other responds with Ça va bien, merci or Ça va mal (if appropriate).

Learners also practice introducing their partners to the class or another pair by saying C’est mon ami. Encourage the use of gestures like pointing and smiling to make the activity lively and meaningful. Learners repeat the dialogues multiple times, switching roles to ensure everyone practices both asking and answering questions.

Assessment Checks
The teacher listens and observes during pair activities, checking for correct use of vocabulary and expressions, accurate pronunciation, and appropriate conversational flow. The teacher may randomly ask individual learners to perform the dialogue aloud to the whole class to assess confidence and understanding.

Peer Review
Learners work in pairs to practice the dialogues and provide friendly feedback on each other’s pronunciation and sentence structure. Encourage positive and constructive comments, focusing on clarity, politeness, and correct phrasing. This peer interaction builds cooperative learning and boosts confidence.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use repetition and modeling extensively to help learners internalize the phrases. Encourage polite conversational habits such as smiling and making eye contact during role-plays. Visual aids like flashcards or pictures of friends can enhance understanding. Keep the atmosphere light and fun to reduce anxiety about speaking in a new language. Reinforce the importance of greetings and polite questions in building friendships.

Assignment (Homework)
Ask learners to practice asking and answering Comment ça va? with family members or friends at home. They should also try introducing a family member or friend in French using C’est mon ami. Encourage them to practice speaking clearly and politely, and be ready to share their experiences in the next class.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Ask a classmate “Comment ça va?” and respond appropriately
Follow-up Activity: Pair role-play greeting and introduction exercises
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide sentence starters for learners needing support
Challenge advanced learners to create dialogues with two friends
