Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Where do you get food at home? How about in other countries?
Learner’s Role:
Respond orally, recall vocabulary, and share experiences.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
- Introduce Vocabulary – Places Where Food is Found
Teach the names of common food sources in French:
- Le marché – market
- Le supermarché – supermarket
- Le jardin – garden
- La ferme – farm
Write each on the board and show real-life or printed pictures of each. For example, show a photo of a Liberian open market for le marché, and a French supermarket for le supermarché.
- Model Pronunciation and Usage
Clearly pronounce each word and have learners repeat after you. Use body movement and pointing to associate words with visuals. Example sentence modeling:
- J’achète le poisson au marché.
- Nous trouvons les légumes dans le jardin.
- Il achète le pain au supermarché.
- Introduce Comparative Food Vocabulary
Discuss foods typically eaten in Liberia and compare with other countries:
- Au Liberia, nous mangeons le riz.
- En France, ils mangent le fromage.
- Au Nigeria, on mange le garri.
Point out cultural differences and similarities using pictures and real examples.
- Use a Map or Chart Activity
Show a simple map or country chart. Ask learners to place food images or names under countries (Liberia, France, Nigeria, USA). Use a food comparison chart:
- Liberia – le riz, la banane, le poisson
- France – le fromage, le pain, les croissants
- Nigeria – le garri, le manioc
- Guide Oral Sentence Formation
Model simple sentence patterns:
- Au Liberia, nous mangeons…
- En France, ils mangent…
- J’achète… au marché.
Ask learners to repeat and practice forming their own comparisons and food-source sentences.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
- Repeat vocabulary after the teacher (market, garden, supermarket, farm).
- Identify food sources on picture flashcards or class map.
- Match foods to countries using a chart or cut-out activity.
- Form sentences comparing local and foreign foods orally and in writing.
- Discuss in small groups or pairs the different places where food is found and how people eat in Liberia compared to other countries.
Assessment Checks
- Oral questioning:
- Où achète-t-on le riz ?
- Que mange-t-on au Liberia ? Et en France ?
- Comment dit-on “supermarket” en français ?
- Observe if learners can:
- Correctly use the vocabulary in speech.
- Match foods with sources and countries accurately.
- Form complete comparative sentences.
Peer Review
- Pair learners and have them:
- Ask each other: Qu’est-ce que tu manges au Liberia ? Et en France ?
- Present one sentence each comparing local and foreign food.
- Give feedback on vocabulary use and sentence structure.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
- Use real-life examples and learners’ personal experiences (e.g., “My mom sells at the market”).
- Reinforce sentence starters: Je mange…, Nous mangeons…, Ils mangent…
- Promote visual learning with charts, drawings, or a world food map.
- Link this lesson to prior knowledge (manger, boire, food items) and reinforce pronunciation.
Assignment (Homework)
Task:
Write three complete sentences comparing foods eaten in Liberia with foods in another country, using the sentence structure:
- Au Liberia, nous mangeons…
- En France, ils mangent…
- J’achète… au marché.
Example for learners:
- Au Liberia, nous mangeons le riz.
- En France, ils mangent le fromage.
- J’achète les légumes au marché.

Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Name one Liberian food and one foreign food in French.
• Follow-up Activity: Oral sharing in groups.
