Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you say your name using “Je m’appelle…”?
Learner’s Role:
Respond using correct pronoun and phrase
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by introducing the French personal pronouns: je (I), tu (you), il (he), elle (she). Write each pronoun clearly on the board or display colorful flashcards. Pronounce each pronoun slowly and clearly, encouraging learners to repeat several times. Explain simply that these words tell us who we are talking about.
Next, introduce the verb s’appeler (to be called) and explain that it means “to say your name.” Write the verb on the board and model the conjugation with each pronoun in a simple table:
Je m’appelle – I am called / My name is
Tu t’appelles – You are called / Your name is
Il s’appelle – He is called / His name is
Elle s’appelle – She is called / Her name is
Use a chart or visual aid to show the pronouns and the matching form of s’appeler. Demonstrate each form with a name example, e.g., Je m’appelle Paul, Tu t’appelles Marie, Il s’appelle Jean, Elle s’appelle Sophie.
Model short dialogues combining pronouns and s’appeler to introduce oneself and others. For example:
Teacher: Je m’appelle Marie. Et toi? (My name is Marie. And you?)
Learner: Je m’appelle Paul. (My name is Paul.)
Teacher: Il s’appelle Jean. (He is called Jean.)
Guide learners through oral drills, repeating each phrase multiple times with clear pronunciation and gestures. Use call-and-response exercises to build confidence and fluency.
Organize paired practice where learners take turns saying their names using different pronouns and s’appeler, encouraging full sentences like Je m’appelle... and Tu t’appelles.... Circulate to provide feedback and gentle correction.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Repeat personal pronouns aloud in chorus and individually.
Practice saying the conjugated forms of s’appeler with different pronouns.
Engage in oral drills led by the teacher to build fluency.
Role-play self-introductions and introductions of classmates using the full phrases. For example, one learner says Je m’appelle..., and the partner responds Tu t’appelles... or introduces a third learner using Il s’appelle... / Elle s’appelle....
Assessment Checks
Observe learners during oral drills and paired practice for correct use of pronouns and verb forms. Listen for clear pronunciation and sentence structure.
Ask a few learners to say sentences aloud to the class for spot checks.
Peer Review
Pairs listen to each other and provide positive feedback on pronunciation and correct verb use. Encourage gentle correction and support.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use repetition, modeling, and visual aids like charts and flashcards to reinforce learning.
Encourage learners to use gestures like pointing to self for je and to a partner for tu to deepen understanding.
Make learning fun by turning drills into games, such as “Name Tag” where learners introduce themselves using Je m’appelle... and find partners to practice Tu t’appelles...
Assignment (Homework)
Ask learners to write five sentences introducing themselves or family members, using different pronouns and the verb s’appeler. For example:
Je m’appelle Paul.
Tu t’appelles Marie.
Il s’appelle Jean.
They should practice saying these sentences aloud to family members and be ready to share in class.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Conjugate s’appeler with given pronoun
Follow-up Activity: Oral role-play introductions in pairs
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide prompts for learners needing assistance
Challenge advanced learners to form dialogues using multiple pronouns
