Instructional Materials
• Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 2

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class: How many seasons are there in Liberia? What are they called in English?

Learner’s Role: Respond with English names and previous weather vocabulary.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by introducing the French vocabulary for the four seasons found in Liberia: la saison sèche (dry season), la saison des pluies (rainy season), la saison fraîche (cool season), and la saison chaude (hot season). Use clear, colorful pictures showing typical scenes from each season—such as sunny dry landscapes, heavy rains, cool mornings, and hot afternoons. Discuss key characteristics of each season with the learners, for example, En saison sèche, il fait très chaud et il ne pleut pas beaucoup (In the dry season, it’s very hot and it doesn’t rain much). Encourage learners to listen carefully and repeat the season names aloud several times. Use question-and-answer drills to prompt learners to recall characteristics, e.g., Qu’est-ce qui arrive pendant la saison des pluies? (What happens during the rainy season?). Reinforce oral practice through repetition, choral responses, and individual answers. Connect the season names to weather vocabulary previously learned to strengthen understanding.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Learners actively repeat the French names for Liberia’s seasons after the teacher, focusing on correct pronunciation. They participate in matching activities where they connect pictures depicting scenes such as sunny skies or heavy rain to the correct season name. Using simple French phrases, learners describe one or two characteristics of each season during group or partner discussions, practicing sentences like La saison sèche est chaude or Il pleut beaucoup en saison des pluies. These activities encourage both vocabulary retention and oral expression.

Assessment Checks
The teacher conducts oral questioning to check learners’ recall of season names and their characteristics, asking questions such as Quelle saison est-ce? while showing pictures. Matching exercises are used to assess learners’ ability to associate the correct season with its image. Observations during group discussions help verify learners’ correct use of vocabulary and sentence structure.

Peer Review
Learners pair up and practice saying the names of the seasons to each other. They take turns describing one characteristic in French and provide gentle feedback to help their partner improve pronunciation and sentence construction. This peer interaction builds confidence and reinforces learning.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use authentic visuals from Liberia to make the lesson relevant—photos of rainy streets, sunny skies, and cool mornings help learners connect language with real life. Encourage linking the seasons’ names with previously learned weather vocabulary to deepen understanding and retention. Repeat activities with variation to accommodate different learning styles.

Assignment (Homework)
Learners draw one picture representing each of Liberia’s four seasons, such as a sunny day for la saison sèche or rain for la saison des pluies. Under each drawing, they write the season’s name in French and one sentence describing a characteristic, e.g., La saison chaude est très chaude. This reinforces vocabulary, sentence formation, and personal engagement with the topic.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Name the seasons in French orally.
• Follow-up Activity: Partner oral quiz.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Use pictures, gestures, and peer support.
