Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you tell me your name in French?
Learner’s Role:
Respond orally with “Je m’appelle…”
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by warmly introducing the phrase Je m’appelle… (My name is…). Write the phrase clearly on the board or display it on a flashcard. Pronounce it slowly and clearly, breaking it down syllable by syllable to help learners hear and repeat correctly. Invite the whole class to repeat the phrase several times together, then in smaller groups, to build confidence.

Next, introduce the question form Comment tu t’appelles ? (What is your name?). Explain simply that this is how you ask someone their name in French. Model the question with an expressive and friendly tone. Use gestures like pointing to yourself when saying Je m’appelle… and pointing to the learner when asking Comment tu t’appelles ?

Demonstrate the use of C’est… (This is…) to introduce objects or classmates. Hold up a familiar classroom object (like a book or pencil) and say, C’est un stylo. Then, introduce a peer by saying, C’est mon ami (friend). Use a warm tone and smile to show friendliness. Encourage learners to watch carefully and repeat after you.

Guide learners through a step-by-step role-play activity. Pair learners and have them practice asking and answering Comment tu t’appelles ? and responding with Je m’appelle… Encourage them to also use C’est… to introduce a classmate or an object in their pair. Circulate to provide support, model pronunciation, and correct gently.

Use positive reinforcement such as praise and stickers to motivate participation. Encourage learners to speak loudly and clearly, reminding them that mistakes are part of learning.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Learners repeat Je m’appelle… and Comment tu t’appelles ? aloud after the teacher, practicing clear pronunciation and expression.

In pairs, learners take turns asking each other’s names using Comment tu t’appelles ? and answering with Je m’appelle…

Learners practice introducing a peer or a classroom object using C’est… during the role-play. For example, C’est mon ami Paul or C’est une gomme.

Learners repeat these exchanges several times to gain fluency and confidence.

Assessment Checks
The teacher listens carefully to each pair during role-play, checking for correct use of phrases, pronunciation, and fluency. The teacher asks a few learners to perform their introductions in front of the class to demonstrate understanding.

Peer Review
In pairs, learners listen to each other and offer positive feedback on pronunciation and sentence structure. Encourage learners to help each other improve gently and kindly.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use visuals such as name tags, flashcards, and pictures to support understanding. Encourage gestures like pointing to self and others to reinforce meaning. Use repetition and praise to boost learner confidence. Emphasize the importance of polite introductions in social settings.

Make the lesson lively and fun by adding simple games such as “Who am I?” where learners guess names based on C’est… sentences.

Assignment (Homework)
Ask learners to practice introducing themselves and a family member in French at home, using Je m’appelle… and C’est…. Suggest they try to say the phrases with a family member or friend and listen carefully to their pronunciation. They should be ready to share their practice experience in the next class.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Ask a peer’s name and respond using “Je m’appelle…”
Follow-up Activity: Small group role-play introductions
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide sentence frames for learners needing support
Encourage advanced learners to ask and answer about multiple peers
