Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: Teacher asks:
• Can you spell “chemise” and “pantalon”?
Learner’s Role:
Students spell aloud and write the words on mini whiteboards.
B – Building Knowledge
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin the lesson with a quick oral review of clothing vocabulary: la chemise, le pantalon, les chaussures, la robe, le tricot, les chaussettes, le chapeau, le manteau, le parapluie. Review season names and key expressions like:
- En saison des pluies, je porte un manteau.
- En saison sèche, je porte une chemise.
Introduce the purpose of the session: to reinforce spelling, vocabulary, and sentence formation through dictation and guided writing.
- Conduct Dictation
- Read out 5–7 French clothing words slowly and clearly.
- Have learners write them down in their notebooks.
- Repeat each word and spell it aloud for clarity.
- Example words for dictation: la chemise, le pantalon, le manteau, les chaussettes, la robe.
- Model Sentence Formation
- Write and read model sentences on the board:
- Je porte un manteau en saison des pluies.
- En saison sèche, je porte une chemise et un chapeau.
- Mon frère porte un pantalon et des chaussures.
- Emphasize gender agreement (un manteau, une robe, des chaussures).
- Guide learners step-by-step in constructing their own sentences.
- Writing Practice
- Learners write 3–5 original sentences using the clothing words.
- Encourage variety and creativity in their sentences (e.g., mentioning family members, favorite clothes, or specific weather conditions).
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
- Participate in dictation exercise by listening and writing vocabulary correctly.
- Practice spelling aloud in pairs.
- Write original sentences using clothing vocabulary and seasonal expressions.
- Use a word bank (provided on board or flashcards) to assist sentence writing.
- Read written sentences aloud with a partner for oral reinforcement.
Assessment Checks
- Monitor learners during dictation to ensure correct spelling.
- Collect and review written sentences for correct sentence structure, article-noun agreement, and vocabulary usage.
- Provide individual or group feedback after reviewing common mistakes.
- Ask some learners to read their best sentence aloud to the class.
Peer Review
- In pairs, learners exchange their notebooks.
- They check each other’s spelling using the word list provided.
- They read each other’s sentences and provide simple feedback: thumbs up for correct sentences or underline any confusing parts for discussion.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
- Reinforce vocabulary through repetition and dictation to build spelling confidence.
- Encourage learners to use full, grammatically correct French sentences.
- Use visuals to assist lower-level learners with word meaning during writing.
- Highlight gender agreement and plural forms as part of sentence correction.
- Scaffold sentence writing by offering sentence starters like:
- Je porte…
- En saison des pluies…
- Mon frère/ma sœur porte…
Assignment (Homework)
Learners will write five full French sentences describing what they or others wear during different seasons.
Example homework sentences:
- En saison des pluies, je porte un parapluie et un manteau.
- Ma sœur porte une robe en saison sèche.
- Mon père porte une chemise et un pantalon.
- Je porte des chaussettes et des chaussures.
- Nous portons un tricot quand il fait froid.
Encourage students to add small drawings beside each sentence to help with visual understanding and vocabulary retention.
