Class birthday data chart, flashcards for dates
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
When is your birthday? How do we say dates in French?
Learner’s Role:
Answer orally and recall days, months, and numbers
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by introducing key birthday phrases in French: “Je suis né(e) le…” (I was born on…) and “Mon anniversaire est le…” (My birthday is on…). Explain the meaning of each phrase and when to use them. Emphasize the importance of including the definite article “le” before the date, which is a common point of confusion for learners.

Demonstrate how to write full dates in French format, which is typically day + month + year (e.g., “Je suis né(e) le 15 mars 2015”). Write several examples on the board, highlighting correct spelling of months and the position of “le” before the date. Explain that the day is written as a number and the month is written in letters.

Organize a graphing activity where learners collect classmates’ birthdays through simple oral questioning (“Quand es-tu né(e)?” or “C’est quand ton anniversaire?”). Use a prepared chart or graph on the board where learners can plot the birthdays according to months or dates. This activity connects language skills with visual and mathematical skills, helping learners see the distribution of birthdays in the class.

Lead oral repetition of full birthday dates, encouraging learners to practice both the phrases and correct pronunciation of numbers and months. Use call-and-response drills to reinforce confidence and fluency.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Ask and answer questions about their own and classmates’ birthdays using the target phrases, practicing polite conversational exchanges.

Write full dates in French on worksheets or notebooks, ensuring the correct structure with “le” before the date, and proper spelling of months.

Participate actively in the graphing activity by listening carefully, recording classmates’ birthdays, and plotting the data accurately on the class graph.

Assessment Checks
Observe learners for correct use of birthday phrases in both oral and written forms. Confirm they use “le” correctly before dates.

Check the accuracy of written full dates for correct day, month spelling, and order.

Monitor pronunciation during oral repetition, ensuring clarity and confidence in saying dates.

Peer Review
Pairs take turns asking and answering birthday questions, then check each other’s written dates for accuracy in spelling and sentence structure. Provide gentle corrective feedback where needed.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Tie this lesson closely with previous lessons on days, months, and numbers to reinforce vocabulary and date concepts.

Highlight the grammatical rule of using “le” before dates, as this is a frequent error. Provide extra practice if necessary.

Use visual aids such as birthday charts, calendars, and flashcards to make the concept tangible and engaging.

Assignment (Homework)
Ask learners to write their own birthday in French, including the full date format, on a piece of paper or in their homework notebooks. Encourage them to practice saying the phrase aloud with family members or friends to build confidence.

Optional: Learners can decorate their birthday writing with drawings or stickers to personalize the homework and increase motivation.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Write today’s date and your birthday in French
Follow-up Activity: Oral birthday sentence practice in pairs
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide templates for learners needing writing support
Challenge advanced learners to write sentences for 2–3 classmates
