Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you tell me what you eat and drink every day in French?

Learner’s Role:
Respond orally, recall previously learned sentences, and participate in brief conjugation drill.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)

  1. Define Conjugation
    • Begin by explaining: “Conjugation means changing the verb so it matches the person doing the action.”
    • Write the infinitive forms on the board:
      manger = to eat
      boire = to drink
  2. Introduce Full Conjugation of Manger and Boire (Present Tense)
Display a conjugation chart for both verbs:

MANGER (to eat)

  • Je mange – I eat
  • Tu manges – You eat
  • Il/Elle mange – He/She eats
  • Nous mangeons – We eat
  • Vous mangez – You (plural/formal) eat
  • Ils/Elles mangent – They eat

BOIRE (to drink)

  • Je bois – I drink
  • Tu bois – You drink
  • Il/Elle boit – He/She drinks
  • Nous buvons – We drink
  • Vous buvez – You (plural/formal) drink
  • Ils/Elles boivent – They drink
  1. Conduct Oral Repetition Drills
    • Say each form clearly and slowly.
    • Learners repeat each line chorally (as a group), then individually.
    • Emphasize pronunciation, especially for more difficult forms like buvons, boivent, mangeons.
  2. Use Fill-in-the-Blank Practice
    • Write sentences on the board and ask learners to fill in the correct form of the verb.
      Examples:
      • Je ______ du jus. (bois)
      • Nous ______ du riz. (mangeons)
      • Elle ______ de l’eau. (boit)
  1. Model Sentence Construction with Food Vocabulary
    • Combine food vocabulary with conjugated verbs:
      • Tu manges le pain.
      • Ils boivent du lait.
      • Nous mangeons des légumes.
      • Il mange du poisson.
  1. Engage Learners in Role-Play Dialogues
    • Give learners short dialogues to perform in pairs:
      Example:
      • A: Que manges-tu ?
      • B: Je mange du riz.
      • A: Et que bois-tu ?
      • B: Je bois de l’eau.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Read and repeat each conjugated verb after the teacher.
  • Fill in missing verbs in sentences (oral and written).
  • Construct complete sentences using the correct subject and verb.
  • Perform role-plays using manger and boire in context with food vocabulary.
  • Participate in class quiz or games (e.g., flashcard matching for subject + verb forms).

Assessment Checks

  • Oral Conjugation Checks: Ask learners to recite the conjugation of manger or boire with any given subject.
  • Written Exercises: Learners complete fill-in-the-blank worksheets or whiteboard activities.
  • Sentence Review: Learners write and say full sentences, e.g., Il boit de l’eau or Nous mangeons des fruits.

Peer Review

  • In pairs, learners quiz each other:
    • One says a subject (e.g., Tu), and the other gives the correct conjugated verb (e.g., manges).
    • Partners take turns giving and correcting sentences aloud.
  • Learners read each other’s written sentences and check for subject-verb agreement.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Emphasize the importance of matching subject and verb correctly.
  • Encourage learners to always say full sentences, not just single words.
  • Reinforce with gestures for each subject (e.g., pointing to self for Je, to a friend for Tu, to a group for Nous).
  • Use color-coded flashcards to show subjects and verbs for visual memory.

Assignment (Homework)

Worksheet Exercise:
Learners complete a worksheet with the following sections:

  1. Conjugation Practice: Fill in a chart with the correct forms of manger and boire for:
    • Je
    • Tu
    • Il

    • At least two using boire
      Example:
    • Je mange du pain.
    • Il boit de l’eau.
    • Nous mangeons les fruits.

Encourage learners to draw a small picture next to one or two of their sentences for fun and engagement
