Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 20, Period 4
Topic: Weather Expressions
Sub-topic: Oral Expressions Describing Weather
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: Use simple French sentences to describe the weather orally (Il fait chaud, Il pleut, Il fait froid, Il y a du vent).

Previous Knowledge
Students already know key weather vocabulary in French.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 2

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class: How would you describe today’s weather in English? Can you say it in French?

Learner’s Role: Respond orally and predict the French equivalents.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Start by modeling simple, commonly used French weather sentences such as Il fait chaud (It’s hot), Il pleut (It’s raining), Il fait froid (It’s cold), Il y a du vent (It’s windy), and Il fait du soleil (It’s sunny). Use clear gestures and visuals like weather icons, flashcards, or pictures to reinforce the meaning of each sentence. For example, when saying Il pleut, mimic rain by moving fingers downward, or for Il fait chaud, fan yourself. Encourage learners to listen carefully and then repeat the sentences multiple times to build correct pronunciation and intonation. After modeling, organize learners into pairs to practice saying these sentences to each other, ensuring everyone has a chance to speak. Introduce common weather expressions used in daily conversations, such as Quel temps fait-il aujourd’hui ? (What’s the weather like today?) and Aujourd’hui, il fait... (Today, it is…). Use question-and-answer drills to reinforce these expressions, guiding learners to respond accurately. Throughout the lesson, correct pronunciation gently and encourage learners to form full sentences rather than single words.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Learners actively repeat the modeled weather sentences after the teacher, practicing pronunciation and rhythm. In pairs, they take turns asking and answering questions about the weather using the newly learned expressions, for example, one asks Quel temps fait-il aujourd’hui ? and the other replies Aujourd’hui, il fait froid. They engage in role-play activities where one learner acts as a weather reporter describing the day’s weather, while the other responds or asks follow-up questions. Learners answer the teacher’s oral questions, demonstrating their understanding of vocabulary and sentence structure. They are encouraged to use full sentences during all spoken practice to develop fluency.

Assessment Checks
The teacher observes learners as they participate in pair activities and role-plays, checking for correct pronunciation, sentence formation, and appropriate use of expressions. Informal questioning during class helps gauge individual learner progress. Specific attention is paid to learners’ ability to produce complete sentences instead of single words. The teacher provides immediate corrective feedback where necessary.

Peer Review
During paired activities, learners listen carefully to each other’s pronunciation and sentence usage. They provide friendly feedback to help their partner improve. This peer interaction encourages collaborative learning and helps learners become more aware of correct language patterns.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Reinforce the vocabulary and phrases introduced in the previous week to consolidate understanding. Use a variety of teaching aids such as pictures, gestures, and repetitive drills to cater to different learning styles. Stress the importance of using complete sentences to promote effective communication in French. Encourage learners to observe the weather daily and try using the phrases outside the classroom to deepen their practical understanding.

Assignment (Homework)
Learners are asked to write three sentences describing different types of weather in French. For example, Il fait chaud aujourd’hui, Il pleut souvent en saison des pluies, Il y a du vent ce matin. Encourage creativity by asking them to draw small pictures illustrating each weather type alongside their sentences. This task reinforces vocabulary, sentence structure, and spelling.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Oral practice – describe today’s weather in French.
• Follow-up Activity: Mini-group role-play.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Use visual aids, gestures, and sentence starters.
