Instructional Materials
• Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 2
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class: Can you name some weather conditions in English? How do you feel when it is sunny or rainy?
Learner’s Role: Respond to questions and share experiences with different types of weather.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Begin by introducing essential French weather vocabulary such as le soleil (sun), la pluie (rain), le vent (wind), la neige (snow), le nuage (cloud), l’orage (storm), le parapluie (umbrella), il fait chaud (it’s hot), and il fait froid (it’s cold). Use vivid, colorful pictures and flashcards displaying each weather condition to capture learners’ attention. Supplement these with gestures mimicking the weather (e.g., shading eyes for sun, waving hands for wind) to reinforce meaning non-verbally. Pronounce each word slowly and clearly, then provide simple example sentences, such as “Aujourd’hui, il fait chaud” (Today, it is hot) or “Il pleut, prends ton parapluie” (It’s raining, take your umbrella). Engage the class in repeating the words and sentences aloud several times, correcting pronunciation gently where needed. Use matching games where learners connect flashcards with pictures, encouraging active involvement. Vary activities to maintain interest, such as asking learners to point to flashcards when they hear a word or to form sentences using the new vocabulary.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Learners actively listen to the teacher’s pronunciation and repeat the weather vocabulary aloud, practicing clarity and intonation. They participate in a matching activity, pairing vocabulary flashcards with the correct weather pictures displayed on the board or around the classroom. Learners engage in pronunciation drills, saying words and short sentences multiple times to build confidence. They practice using simple sentences to describe the weather, for example, “Il fait soleil” or “Il pleut.” This encourages learners to internalize both vocabulary and basic sentence structure. During pair work, learners take turns saying the weather words and giving feedback on each other’s pronunciation, fostering peer learning.
Assessment Checks
The teacher conducts informal oral questioning throughout the lesson to check comprehension and recall. Questions include: “Comment dit-on ‘sun’ en français?” (What is “sun” in French?), or “Montre-moi la carte avec ‘la pluie’” (Show me the picture of “rain”). The teacher listens for correct pronunciation and vocabulary usage. Additionally, during pair work, the teacher circulates, observing and noting learners’ ability to say and recognize the weather words accurately.
Peer Review
Learners work in pairs to practice saying the weather vocabulary aloud. They take turns pronouncing words and sentences, offering each other constructive feedback on pronunciation and fluency. This peer interaction helps reinforce learning in a supportive environment and builds confidence in speaking.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Use real-life examples by relating the vocabulary to the actual weather conditions outside or recent weather experiences. For example, if it’s sunny, say “Aujourd’hui, il fait soleil” and encourage learners to use the phrase themselves. Incorporate daily observations of the weather to make vocabulary meaningful and relevant. Use consistent gestures and visuals to help learners associate words with their meanings, catering to visual and kinesthetic learning styles. Repetition and varied practice methods are key to retention, so revisit vocabulary frequently throughout the week.
Assignment (Homework)
Ask learners to draw a picture illustrating today’s weather (e.g., sun, rain, clouds) and write the corresponding French word or phrase below the drawing (e.g., “Aujourd’hui, il pleut”). Encourage them to share their drawings and sentences during the next class to reinforce learning and build speaking confidence.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write three weather words in French.
• Follow-up Activity: Oral recitation of weather words in a small group.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Visual aids, peer support, and repetition for learners needing extra help.
