Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook for Grade 2
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher writes 5 + 2 = ? and 6 + 1 = ? Pupils solve and notice both sides are equal. Teacher introduces symbols =, <, >.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Equality (=) means both sides are the same.
Inequality (<, >) means one side is smaller or greater.
Example 1: 8 + 4 = 12
Example 2: 7 + 2 < 15
Example 3: 10 + 5 > 12
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Pupils use flashcards to fill blanks: 6 + 2 ___ 8
Use math balance scale to show equality and inequality
Solve worksheets with correct symbols
Assessment Checks:
Which is correct: 9 + 1 ___ 10?
Is 7 + 5 = 12 true or false?
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Equality compares two sides that are the same. Inequality compares two sides that are not the same. Symbols help us show relationships in numbers.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Pupils recap that equality shows balance, inequality shows greater or smaller.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Fill in the blank: 11 + 3 ___ 14.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Complete: (i) 15 + 2 ___ 20 (ii) 10 + 5 ___ 12 (iii) 7 + 7 ___ 14
Follow-up Activity:
Students compare fruits at home (e.g., apples vs. oranges) using <, >, or =.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide hands-on support using real counters for struggling learners.
