Topic: Addition with Regrouping
Sub-topic: Introduction to Regrouping in Addition

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Understand the concept of regrouping
Solve addition problems where the sum of the ones column is greater than 9
Add 2-digit numbers using carrying over (regrouping)

Previous Knowledge
Students already know how to add two-digit numbers without regrouping

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher writes simple two-digit addition on the board such as 23 + 15 and asks learners to solve without regrouping. Teacher then presents 27 + 18 and asks learners what happens when the ones column exceeds 9. Learners share ideas as a link to regrouping.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Regrouping means carrying over a value from the ones column to the tens column when the sum of ones is greater than 9. For example:
27 + 18
Step 1: Add the ones column (7 + 8 = 15). Write 5 in the ones place and carry over 1 to the tens place.
Step 2: Add the tens column (2 + 1 + 1 = 4). The total is 45.
Another example:
46 + 37
Ones: 6 + 7 = 13. Write 3, carry 1.
Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8. Final answer = 83.
Both vertical and horizontal addition can be used, but vertical makes carrying easier.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Use base-10 blocks to show regrouping by trading 10 ones for 1 ten.
Pair activity: each pair solves five regrouping problems.
Practice with money addition: ₦25 + ₦38, regrouping ones into tens.

Assessment Checks:
Teacher asks students to solve 58 + 27 and 64 + 19 on the board.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Regrouping is used whenever the sum of a column exceeds 9. The extra tens are carried to the next column. This ensures accuracy in addition beyond simple two-digit sums.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Regrouping means carrying over when the sum in a column is greater than 9. Vertical addition helps us see this clearly.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Solve 46 + 28 and 53 + 39.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Solve: 72 + 29, 68 + 35, 47 + 26, 39 + 48.

Follow-up Activity:
Students practice regrouping using base-10 drawings at home.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Struggling learners use counters or number lines. Advanced learners attempt 3-digit regrouping.
