Topic: Geometry

Sub-topic: Line Segments and Their Properties

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Define a line segment
Differentiate between a line, a ray, and a line segment
Draw and name line segments correctly

Previous Knowledge
Students already know how to draw straight lines with a ruler.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks students to stretch their arms from one point to another. Teacher then asks: “What do we call a straight connection between two points?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Definition: A line segment is a straight path that joins two points.
Comparison:
A line goes on without ending in both directions (↔).
A ray starts at one point and goes on in one direction only (→).
A line segment has two fixed endpoints (—).
Examples: The edge of a ruler, the side of a book, the stick of chalk.
Teacher demonstrates drawing line segments with a ruler and naming them with capital letters such as AB or CD.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Students use rulers to draw line segments of different lengths
Students measure and compare line segments with partners
Students identify line segments in classroom objects (blackboard edge, desk edge)

Assessment Checks:
What is a line segment?
How is a line different from a line segment?
Draw and name a line segment AB.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
A line segment is a part of a line with two fixed ends. It is shorter than a line because it does not extend forever. It is useful in drawing shapes and in real-life objects such as doors, windows, and books.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher revises the definition and properties of line segments. Students recall examples around them.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Draw and name a line segment using two letters.
Teacher will collect slips and give oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Draw and label three line segments with different lengths in your exercise book.

Follow-up Activity:
In the next class, students will use line segments to form shapes.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Teacher uses group work for weak learners. Advanced learners will measure line segments using centimeters.
