Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 27, Period 5
Topic: Measurement
Sub-topic: Using Standard Units of Measurement
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify standard units of measurement
Measure using rulers, tape, scales, and measuring cups
Previous Knowledge
Students already know local units of measuring length, weight, and capacity.
Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook for Grade 2, rulers, tape measures, balance scales, measuring cups.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks learners to compare two objects with hand spans. Then teacher asks: “What if your hand is bigger than mine? Would we get the same answer?” Learners think and respond.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Standard units give the same answer for everyone.
Length is measured in meters (m) and centimeters (cm) using rulers and tape.
Weight is measured in kilograms (kg) and grams (g) using scales.
Capacity is measured in liters (l) and milliliters (ml) using measuring cups.
Examples:
A pencil is 15 cm long.
A bag of rice weighs 50 kg.
A bottle of water has a capacity of 1 liter.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Learners measure books with rulers in cm.
Learners weigh objects using a scale.
Learners pour water into a 1-liter container.
Assessment Checks:
What unit measures length?
What unit measures weight?
What unit measures water?
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Standard units make measurement fair and accurate. They are used worldwide in trade, science, and school.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Standard units are used to measure length, weight, and capacity. They help everyone get the same answer.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write the correct unit for each: (a) book length (b) rice weight (c) water in a cup. Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
At home, measure an object with a ruler and write its length.
Follow-up Activity:
Next class, learners bring bottles to measure capacity.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Struggling learners will work with teacher support. Fast learners will convert between cm and m.
Teacher’s Reflection (After Class)
