School Name:
Teacher’s Name:
Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 2
Date: Week 27
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 27, Period 5
Topic: Exercise – Bicycling
Sub-topic: Benefits and Techniques of Bicycling

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Demonstrate safe bicycling techniques. Explain the benefits of bicycling for cardiovascular health and leg strength. Perform warm-up and cool-down stretches before and after bicycling.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know basic leg exercises, balance techniques, and the concept of safe movement learned from locomotor and manipulative games.

Instructional Materials
Bicycles, helmets, cones, mats for stretching, water bottles, chart showing bicycling safety rules.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
The teacher leads learners in light jogging, leg stretches, and arm rotations. Learners are asked: “Who has ridden a bicycle before? How does it make you feel?” Learners share experiences, and the teacher links discussion to cardiovascular health and strength.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Explanation:

  • Benefits of Bicycling: Improves heart health, strengthens leg muscles, enhances balance, and builds endurance.
  • Safety Techniques:
    • Check brakes and tires before riding
    • Wear helmets, knee pads, and appropriate footwear
    • Proper seating and hand positioning
    • Maintain safe spacing between riders
  • Warm-up and Cool-down: Stretching exercises to prevent injury and prepare the body for riding

Demonstration:

  • Teacher shows step-by-step mounting, pedaling, stopping, and turning safely
  • Teacher demonstrates warm-up stretches (arm swings, leg stretches) and cool-down stretches after riding
  • Teacher models proper helmet use and hand positioning on the handlebars

Practical Activity:

  • Learners perform warm-up stretches before riding
  • Take turns riding bicycles under supervision, practicing:
    • Starting and stopping
    • Pedaling efficiently
    • Turning safely
  • Perform cool-down stretches after riding
  • Teacher circulates to monitor safety, technique, and spacing

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Practice warm-up stretches in pairs
  • Ride bicycles, paying attention to safety and posture
  • Observe peers and offer encouragement
  • Discuss orally: “How does your heart feel after riding?” “Which muscles worked hardest?”

Assessment Checks:

  • Teacher observes:
    • Correct use of safety equipment
    • Safe mounting, riding, and stopping
    • Proper warm-up and cool-down routines
  • Oral questions:
    • “Why should we wear helmets?”
    • “Which part of your body becomes stronger when you ride?”
    • “Why is spacing important when riding in a group?”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Bicycling is a cardiovascular exercise that improves heart health, endurance, balance, and leg strength
  • Safety equipment (helmets, knee pads) is essential to prevent injury
  • Warm-up prepares muscles and joints, while cool-down prevents stiffness
  • Practicing with supervision helps learners develop confidence, control, and coordination
  • Reflecting on the activity teaches learners to connect exercise with overall physical fitness

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Learners demonstrate safe mounting and stopping techniques. Teacher reviews benefits of bicycling and importance of safety.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: 1. Mention one benefit of bicycling. 2. Name one safety rule. 3. Why should we stretch before and after riding? Teacher collects slips and provides oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Learners practice cycling under supervision at home and note improvements in balance or leg strength.

Follow-up Activity:
Next lesson will focus on classroom and locomotor games to practice motor skills, coordination, teamwork, and spatial awareness.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Learners without bicycles can perform stationary pedaling movements or balance exercises. Peer pairing ensures safety and participation.
