Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 2
Date: Week 13
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 13, Period 3
Topic: Physical Fitness and Body Screening
Sub-topic: Introduction to Physical Fitness and Body Screening

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Define physical fitness and body screening. Explain the importance of checking strength, flexibility, endurance, and health. Demonstrate simple exercises to test strength, flexibility, and balance. Discuss why it is important to know how fit our bodies are.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know how to perform simple movements such as running, jumping, bending, and stretching.

Instructional Materials
Whistle, cones or markers, skipping ropes, mats for stretching, flashcards showing fitness terms, and open play space.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
The teacher leads a short warm-up session including jogging on the spot, arm swings, and toe touches. The teacher asks students: “How do you know your body is strong?” “Have you ever tried touching your toes or balancing on one leg?” Students share short responses to connect to the topic.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Explanation:

  • Physical fitness is the ability of the body to carry out daily tasks with energy and without getting tired quickly.
  • Body screening is a way to check the body’s strength, flexibility, endurance, and overall health.

Examples of Screening Exercises:

  • Strength: Push-ups, carrying light objects
  • Flexibility: Bending forward to touch toes, side stretches
  • Endurance: Jogging or running for a short period
  • Balance: Standing on one leg, heel-to-toe walk

Demonstration:

  • Teacher demonstrates each test slowly and clearly:
    • Bend forward to touch toes
    • Hold a plank for 10 seconds
    • Jog in place or around the playground for 1 minute
    • Stand on one leg for 20 seconds
  • Learners repeat each demonstration under teacher supervision, maintaining safety and correct form.

Importance of Physical Fitness:

  • Keeps heart, muscles, and bones healthy
  • Makes children active and strong
  • Helps prevent sickness

Importance of Screening:

  • Helps learners know which part of their body needs improvement
  • Encourages self-awareness and goal setting for fitness

Practical Activities:

  • Learners practice flexibility by bending forward to touch toes
  • Learners practice strength by holding a plank for 10 seconds
  • Learners practice endurance by jogging for 1 minute
  • Learners practice balance by standing on one leg for 20 seconds
  • Guided discussion: Learners share why these tests are important for their body and how they feel after performing them

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Perform each screening exercise carefully and safely
  • Observe peers and give encouraging feedback
  • Discuss orally: “Which exercise was easiest? Which was hardest? Why?”
  • Reflect on personal strengths and areas for improvement

Assessment Checks:

  • Teacher observes learners’ correctness, posture, and participation in each exercise
  • Ask learners orally:
    • “What is physical fitness?”
    • “Why do we check our flexibility?”
    • “Which exercise can test balance?”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Physical fitness means using the body well in play, work, and daily life without getting too tired
  • Includes:
    • Strength: How strong our muscles are
    • Flexibility: How well we can bend and stretch
    • Endurance: How long we can move before getting tired
    • Balance: How well we can stay steady without falling
  • Body screening is a simple way to check these areas
  • Knowing our fitness helps us understand our health and improve weaker areas

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: The teacher reviews by asking learners to recall the meaning of physical fitness and body screening. Learners demonstrate one exercise that tests flexibility, one for strength, and one for balance.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Learners answer orally or on slips of paper questions such as: 1. What is physical fitness? 2. Name one exercise that shows flexibility. 3. Why do we check our body’s fitness? The teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Learners will practice one strength activity (e.g., push-ups) and one flexibility activity (e.g., bending) at home and share their experience in the next class.

Follow-up Activity:
In the next lesson, learners will build on these activities by learning types of exercises that help improve fitness.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Learners with lower ability will be paired with stronger peers to practice. Activities will be adjusted for learners with physical challenges, such as seated stretches instead of toe touches. Teacher encourages all learners by praising effort, not just performance.
