Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher writes two sentences on the board: “The boy run fast.” and “The boy runs fast.” Learners identify the correct sentence.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Definitions and Detailed Explanations (10–12 minutes)

Begin the lesson by writing the four parts of speech clearly on the board. Explain and provide multiple examples for each.

🔹 Nouns – Names of people, places, things, or animals.

Definition:

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples:

  • People: boy, teacher, nurse
  • Places: school, Liberia, classroom
  • Things: pencil, chair, book
  • Animals: dog, monkey, cat

Sentences:

  • The dog barked loudly.
  • My teacher is very kind.
  • We are going to the market.

🔹 Verbs – Action or being words

Definition:

A verb is a word that shows action or state of being.

Examples:

  • run, jump, eat, sleep, read, write

Sentences:

  • The boy runs every morning.
  • I eat rice for lunch.
  • She sings beautifully.

🔹 Adjectives – Words that describe nouns

Definition:

An adjective is a word that describes a noun. It tells more about the noun.

Examples:

  • colors: red, blue, green
  • size: big, small, tall
  • shape: round, square, flat
  • other: happy, noisy, kind

Sentences:

  • She has a red dress.
  • That is a tall tree.
  • We saw a small cat.

🔹 Pronouns – Words that replace nouns

Definition:

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.

Examples:

  • Personal: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
  • Possessive: my, your, his, her, their
  • Demonstrative: this, that, these, those

Sentences:

  • She is my friend.
  • They are going to school.
  • It is raining outside.

  1. Subject-Verb Agreement Explanation (8–10 minutes)

Definition:

Subject-verb agreement means that the subject and the verb in a sentence must agree in number (singular or plural).

🔹 Rules and Examples:

Subject Type

Verb Example

Sample Sentence

Singular subject

+ singular verb

The boy runs fast.

Plural subject

+ plural verb

The boys run every day.

Extra Examples:

  • She reads books.
  • They read together.
  • My mother cooks dinner.
  • The children play outside.

  1. Teacher Modeling and Class Practice (5–7 minutes)

Step 1: Sorting Game (oral or board activity)
The teacher writes a mix of words on the board:

Example word list:
ball, dances, big, teacher, they, sings, sharp, runs, school, green, it

Ask learners:

  • "Which of these are nouns?"
  • "Which are verbs?"
  • "Which are adjectives?"
  • "Which are pronouns?"

The class helps sort the words under correct headings.

Step 2: Building Sentences

Teacher models 2–3 complete sentences using all four parts of speech with correct subject-verb agreement:

Example Sentences:

  • She (pronoun) has a big (adjective) book (noun) and reads (verb) every day.
  • The teacher (noun) teaches (verb) in a small (adjective) school (noun).
  • They (pronoun) run (verb) fast on the green (adjective) field.

Learners create their own sentences orally and in writing using a simple structure:

Structure:
[Pronoun/Noun] + [Verb] + [Adjective] + [Noun]

  1. Learners’ Activities (Expanded – 10–15 minutes)

Activity A: Sorting Parts of Speech

  • Learners are given a worksheet or word card set to sort words into: Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Pronouns.
  • Example card words: cat, run, blue, she, walk, boy, kind, jump, it

Activity B: Sentence Creation

  • In pairs, learners use the sorted words to create 3–5 full sentences using subject-verb agreement.
  • They underline the subject and verb in each sentence.

Activity C: Subject-Verb Agreement Drill

Teacher reads sentences aloud and learners say if the sentence is correct or incorrect.

Examples:

  1. The girl plays in the yard. ✅
  2. They walks to school. ❌ (should be "walk")
  3. My friends are coming. ✅
  4. He like mangoes. ❌ (should be "likes")

Learners correct the incorrect ones.

  1. Assessment Checks

✔ Observation During Activities:

  • Can learners correctly identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns?
  • Can they form complete sentences using all four parts of speech?

✔ Quick Review Questions (Oral/Written):

  • What is a noun? Give 2 examples.
  • What is a verb? Use it in a sentence.
  • Use a pronoun in a sentence.
  • Which is correct: “He play” or “He plays”?

✔ Exit Slip Activity:

  • Write 2 short sentences using any:
    • 1 noun
    • 1 verb
    • 1 adjective
    • 1 pronoun
    • with correct subject-verb agreement

  1. Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

🔹 Why This Matters:

  • Understanding parts of speech helps learners build strong sentences.
  • Subject-verb agreement ensures proper grammar in writing and speaking.
  • These grammar skills improve learners’ reading comprehension, storytelling, and written composition.

🔹 Support for Struggling Learners:

  • Use color-coded cards for each part of speech.
  • Provide sentence frames:
    • “The ___ (noun) is ___ (verb).”
    • “She ___ (verb) the ___ (noun).”

🔹 Differentiation Tip:

  • Allow advanced learners to write short stories using a mix of parts of speech and underline them.
  • For ESL or slower learners, use pictures to match words with meanings.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher revises all four parts of speech and demonstrates subject-verb agreement with more examples.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Learners write one sentence each showing subject-verb agreement

Assignment (Expanded):
Write five sentences using different parts of speech and underline the verbs

Follow-up Activity:
Group game – “Find the Verb” in given sentences

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide word banks for weaker learners
Challenge advanced learners to write a paragraph using at least 2 pronouns, 2 adjectives, and correct subject-verb agreement
