Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher dictates 5 high-frequency words for quick spelling drill.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Definitions and Detailed Explanations (10–12 minutes)

🔹 Spelling

Definition:

Spelling is the correct order of letters in a word. Knowing how to spell helps you read, write, and speak clearly.

Explanation:
Spelling builds vocabulary. When you know how to spell a word, you can also pronounce it and use it in your reading and writing.

Example Spelling Words (from previous weeks):

  • rectangle
  • revise
  • triangle
  • measure
  • distance
  • friendship
  • suggestion
  • bravery
  • smiling
  • explanation

Teacher writes the words on the board, reads them aloud clearly, and claps out syllables to support pronunciation.

🔹 Friendly Letter Writing

Definition:

A friendly letter is a letter you write to someone you know well, like a friend or family member.

Parts of a Friendly Letter:

  1. Heading – The date at the top of the letter.
  2. Greeting – A way to say hello (e.g., "Dear Mary,")
  3. Body – The main message you want to share
  4. Closing – A polite way to say goodbye (e.g., "Your friend,")
  5. Signature – Your name at the bottom

Example: (Write on board or read from a sample in textbook)

September 24, 2025

Dear John,

How are you? I am doing well. I wanted to tell you about our school sports day. It was fun! I ran in a race and won second place.

Write back soon!

Your friend,

Thomas

🔹 Narrative Writing

Definition:

A narrative is a story that tells what happened. It has a beginning, middle, and end.

Features of a Good Narrative:

  • Characters – Who the story is about
  • Setting – Where and when it happens
  • Events – What happened (in order)
  • Feelings – How the characters felt
  • Descriptive language – Use of adjectives (e.g., "happy teacher," "clean classroom")

Topic for Today:
“Write a story about your school. What do you like? What do you not like?”

Teacher models a short paragraph on the board:

"I like going to school because I see my friends. My favorite subject is Math because I love numbers. I don’t like when it rains and we can’t play outside. My classroom is clean, and my teacher is kind."

  1. Teacher Modeling and Guided Practice (5–7 minutes)

Spelling:

  • Give a trial spelling test of 5–10 words.
  • Use dictation: “Spell the word triangle. Write it on your paper.”
  • Review the words on the board and correct together.

Friendly Letter:

  • On the board, the teacher begins a friendly letter:
    • Heading: September 24, 2025
    • Greeting: Dear Joseph,
    • Writes the body sentence by sentence with learners’ input.

Narrative Writing:

  • Teacher reads a short model paragraph again.
  • Points out adjectives: clean classroom, kind teacher, long lunch break
  • Highlights beginning (introduction), middle (details), and end (closing thought)

  1. Learners’ Activities (Expanded – 10–15 minutes)

✅ Activity A: Trial Spelling Test

  • Learners take a short spelling test with 10 words from the previous weeks.
  • Teacher uses dictation method: reads words slowly, repeats if needed.

✅ Activity B: Write a Friendly Letter

  • Learners choose a classmate or friend to write to.
  • Write on lined paper using the correct letter format.
  • Must include all five parts:
  1. Heading
  2. Greeting
  3. Body (at least 3 sentences)
  4. Closing
  5. Signature

✅ Activity C: Narrative Writing

  • Learners write a short story (1 paragraph) about school:
    • Likes and dislikes
    • Use at least three adjectives
    • Beginning, middle, and end

Extension/Pair Work:

  • Learners exchange narrative paragraphs with a partner.
  • Give one compliment and one suggestion (e.g., "I liked your description of recess. Maybe you can add how you felt.")

  1. Assessment Checks

✔ Spelling Assessment:

  • Review spelling test results.
  • Focus on words learners misspelled: underline errors and review correct spellings.

  1. Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

🔹 Integrated Learning:
This lesson brings together spelling, writing, grammar, and oral communication, helping learners to:

  • Improve spelling through repetition and word study
  • Practice structured writing in both formal (letter) and creative (narrative) forms
  • Apply grammar rules (e.g., adjective use) meaningfully
  • Boost confidence in writing and reading aloud

🔹 Differentiation & Support:

  • For struggling writers, provide sentence starters:
    • “I like my school because...”
    • “My favorite part of school is...”
  • Use visual letter templates for learners who need more structure
  • Pair stronger and weaker learners during peer review

🔹 Extension Activities:

  • Learners can decorate their friendly letter and mail it to a classmate’s mailbox (in-class activity)
