Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Review vocabulary from Weeks 13–16
Ask learners to share new words they learned and use them in a sentence

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Guide learners to write descriptive paragraphs using target vocabulary and roots:
Begin by reminding learners about the root-based adjectives and vocabulary they have learned so far. Explain the goal is to write descriptive paragraphs that clearly paint a picture using these words. Provide a prompt such as: “Describe your favorite place,” “Write about a fun day at school,” or “Describe an exciting event you attended.”

Model writing a paragraph using target vocabulary and root-based adjectives. For example:
“My favorite place is the beautiful garden behind my house. The colorful flowers bloom all year. The musical birds sing songs while the creative butterflies fly around. It is a very peaceful and natural place to relax.”

Explain that paragraphs should have:

  • A topic sentence introducing the subject
  • Supporting sentences with descriptive details using vocabulary words
  • A concluding sentence that wraps up the description

Practice peer review and provide constructive feedback:
Explain the importance of peer review in improving writing. Pair learners and give them a checklist to help them review each other’s paragraphs, focusing on:

  • Use of descriptive vocabulary and root-based adjectives
  • Sentence structure and grammar
  • Clarity and completeness of description

Model how to give kind and helpful feedback by highlighting strengths first and then suggesting improvements.

Facilitate oral storytelling using learned words:
Invite learners to orally share a short story or description they wrote, encouraging them to use their vocabulary words and root-based adjectives clearly and confidently. Highlight expressive storytelling techniques like voice modulation and eye contact.

Play vocabulary games to reinforce understanding and usage:
Examples:

  • Vocabulary Web Challenge: In groups, learners build a web around a target word, adding synonyms, antonyms, root words, and sentences.
  • Word Meaning Matching: Match words with definitions or pictures.
  • Adjective Charades: Act out adjectives while others guess.
  • Sentence Scramble: Rearrange mixed-up sentences containing vocabulary words.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Write descriptive paragraphs individually using a word bank of root-based adjectives and vocabulary.
  • Exchange paragraphs with a partner for peer review, using a guided checklist.
  • Share orally in small groups or whole class, practicing clear storytelling.
  • Complete vocabulary webs and word meaning exercises in pairs or groups.
  • Participate in vocabulary games to deepen understanding and encourage fun learning.

Assessment Checks:

  • Observe paragraphs for accurate and varied use of vocabulary, correct grammar, and descriptive clarity.
  • Listen to oral storytelling for correct vocabulary use, fluency, and engagement.
  • Review peer feedback forms for thoughtfulness and accuracy.
  • Check vocabulary webs and games for correct word connections and comprehension.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Emphasize the interconnectedness of reading, writing, speaking, and vocabulary skills to strengthen overall language mastery.
  • Encourage learners to be creative and bold in using descriptive and root-based words to make their writing vivid.
  • Provide additional scaffolding and support for learners struggling with vocabulary or writing.
  • Promote a positive, supportive environment for peer feedback to build confidence and collaborative skills.
  • Use vocabulary games not only as fun breaks but as meaningful learning reinforcement.
