Descriptive words in context

Instructional Materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners to describe objects in the classroom using one or two words
Introduce the term “adjective” and examples

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Define Adjectives with Examples:
Start by defining an adjective as a word that describes or gives more information about a noun (a person, place, thing, or idea). Explain that adjectives tell us what kind?, which one?, or how many? about the noun.

Examples:

  • The red apple (What kind?)
  • That big house (Which one?)
  • Five happy children (How many?)

Discuss how adjectives make writing more interesting and clear by giving details about nouns.

Introduce Adjective Suffixes (-ive, -ic, -ial):
Explain that many adjectives are formed by adding suffixes like -ive, -ic, -ial to base words. These suffixes often change nouns or verbs into adjectives.

Examples:

  • Active (from act)
  • Scientific (from science)
  • Partial (from part)

Show how the suffix changes the meaning to describe something related to the base word.

Model Using Adjectives in Oral and Written Sentences:
Demonstrate by constructing sentences aloud that include adjectives, both simple and with suffixes:

  • The active boy plays outside every day.
  • We learned about the scientific method in class.
  • She showed only a partial interest in the story.

Write these sentences on the board, underline the adjectives, and explain their role.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Identify Adjectives in Sample Sentences: Provide sentences like “The creative artist painted a beautiful picture.” Learners underline or highlight the adjectives (creative, beautiful).
  • Create Sentences Using Adjectives with Suffixes: Learners write 3–5 sentences using adjectives ending in -ive, -ic, or -ial, either given by the teacher or from a word bank.
  • Share Sentences Orally: Volunteers read their sentences aloud to practice speaking and reinforce learning.
  • Matching Activity: Provide a worksheet where learners match adjectives (some with suffixes) to appropriate nouns. For example, match “active” with “child,” “scientific” with “experiment,” “partial” with “agreement.”

Assessment Checks:

  • Observe learners’ ability to correctly identify adjectives during oral and written exercises.
  • Check if learners correctly use suffixes when forming adjectives in their sentences.
  • Review oral sentence sharing for clear use of descriptive language and correct adjective placement.
  • Mark matching activities for accuracy and understanding.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Reinforce that adjectives answer specific questions about nouns, helping learners focus on the descriptive function.
  • Highlight common adjective suffix patterns and how they change the meaning of base words.
  • Encourage learners to use adjectives creatively to make their writing vivid and engaging.
  • Provide extra support and examples for learners who struggle with suffixes by showing root words and gradually building adjectives.
  • Suggest ongoing practice by asking learners to describe objects, people, or places around them using adjectives in daily conversation or journaling.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap definition, types, and usage of adjectives

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Write 3 adjectives describing a noun and underline suffixes if used
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback

Assignment (Expanded)
Write a paragraph describing a familiar object using at least 5 adjectives
Underline all adjectives and their suffixes

Follow-up Activity
Play an adjective hunt: find adjectives in a short story and classify them

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide word banks for learners needing support
Challenge advanced learners to write descriptive paragraphs using multiple adjective suffixes
