Instructional Materials
English Language textbook for Grade 3

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Show words with familiar roots and ask learners to guess meaning
Introduce new roots and adjectives derived from them

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Explain Root Words and How Adjectives Can Be Formed:
Begin by defining a root word as the basic part of a word that carries the main meaning. Explain that many words are built by adding prefixes or suffixes to root words. Emphasize that adjectives can be formed by adding suffixes like -ive, -ic, and -ial to root words.

Example:

  • Root: act → Adjective: active
  • Root: science → Adjective: scientific
  • Root: nature → Adjective: natural (introduce -al as well)
Explain that these suffixes often mean “having the quality of” or “related to.”

Provide Examples Using Suffixes (-ive, -ic, -ial):
List several roots and the adjectives formed by adding suffixes:

  • create → creative
  • music → musical
  • electric (from electric) - root: electric (can also mention this as an adjective root)
  • fiction → fictional

Discuss how these adjectives describe qualities or characteristics related to the root word.

Model Building Sentences and Short Descriptive Narratives Using Roots:
Demonstrate writing sentences aloud, focusing on how adjectives formed from roots add detail:

  • The creative artist painted a beautiful mural.
  • We listened to a musical performance yesterday.
  • The fictional story had many exciting adventures.
Then, model writing a short descriptive paragraph using multiple adjectives formed from roots:
    Example paragraph:
“During the musical concert, the creative performers played several electric instruments. The fictional stories told through songs made the audience imagine faraway places.”

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Identify Root Words in Given Lists: Provide lists of words with prefixes and suffixes. Learners underline or highlight the root words (e.g., from “creative,” underline “create”).
  • Form Adjectives Using Suffixes and Roots: Give root words and ask learners to add suffixes (-ive, -ic, -ial, -al) to form adjectives. Example roots: create, music, fiction, nature.
  • Write Short Descriptive Paragraphs: Using a word bank of root-based adjectives, learners write paragraphs describing a place, event, or person. Encourage using at least 3 adjectives formed from root words.
  • Present Oral Descriptions: In pairs or small groups, learners share their paragraphs or orally describe something using the target adjectives to practice speaking skills.

Assessment Checks:

  • Observe learners as they correctly form adjectives from roots during activities.
  • Listen during oral presentations to check correct pronunciation and understanding of adjectives.
  • Review written paragraphs for accuracy in adjective use, spelling, and descriptive quality.
  • Ask questions to check if learners understand the connection between root words and their derived adjectives.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Encourage learners to experiment by combining different roots and suffixes to create new adjectives and sentences.
  • Highlight how knowing root words can help understand and decode unfamiliar adjectives.
  • Provide extra practice for learners who find suffixes challenging by giving word-building exercises and games.
  • Remind learners to check spelling carefully when adding suffixes and to practice writing both orally and in writing.
  • Promote vocabulary expansion by encouraging learners to find new root-based adjectives in their reading materials or daily conversations.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Discuss key root words and adjective formation examples

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Write 3 adjectives from given root words and use each in a sentence
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback

Assignment (Expanded)
Write a descriptive paragraph using at least 3 root-based adjectives
Underline all adjectives

Follow-up Activity
Create a root word chart with meanings and adjective forms

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide lists of roots for support
Challenge advanced learners to use multiple roots in longer descriptive passages
