Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• Can you name the parts of your school and what is in them?
• Quick oral quiz on vocabulary
Learner’s Role:
Answer orally, recall vocabulary, and participate in review activities
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
- Facilitate Comprehensive Revision Activities
Begin the session with a quick oral warm-up reviewing previously learned vocabulary. Ask questions like:
- “Comment s’appelle ton école ?”
- “Combien de salles de classe y a-t-il dans ton école ?”
- “Où est le directeur ?”
Use whole-class responses to encourage participation.
- Conduct Interactive Games and Quizzes
Use fun, age-appropriate games to review vocabulary and grammar. Some examples:
- Bingo Game – Using vocabulary cards (e.g., “la bibliothèque,” “le professeur,” “la porte”). Call out the words; learners mark them on their cards.
- Charades or Mimic Game – One student acts out a verb like “laver” or “manger,” others guess the sentence: “Il mange dans la cantine.”
- Jeu du Memory (Memory Card Game) – Match rooms with the right object or staff.
- Spelling Bee – Vocabulary round for school-related words.
- Guide Paragraph Writing
Instruct learners to write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) combining all the learned elements:
- School name
- Number of classrooms
- What they do in the school
- Staff roles
- Rooms and objects
Provide an example on the board:
- “Mon école s’appelle École Internationale. Elle a six salles de classe. Il y a une bibliothèque et une cantine. Le directeur travaille dans son bureau. J’aime mon professeur. Il enseigne dans la salle de classe.”
- Encourage Peer Teaching & Discussions
Organize students into pairs or small groups to exchange their paragraphs. Encourage them to ask each other questions based on their paragraphs and offer polite corrections.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
- Participate in Vocabulary and Grammar Games
Learners play classroom games that reinforce vocabulary recognition, sentence structure, spelling, and verb usage.
- Write Short Paragraphs
Using previously learned vocabulary and sentence structures, learners write a descriptive paragraph about their school.
- Peer Teaching Practice
In pairs, learners:
- Read their paragraphs aloud
- Ask each other comprehension questions
- Correct spelling or grammar errors together
- Oral Practice
Learners volunteer to present their paragraphs in front of the class or in small groups.
Assessment Checks
- Oral Accuracy: Monitor pronunciation, fluency, and structure during games and oral presentations.
- Written Accuracy: Review learners’ written paragraphs to ensure:
- Correct spelling of vocabulary
- Proper conjugation of avoir, and other verbs
- Full sentence formation with subject + verb + complement
- Use of vocabulary in context (e.g., “le directeur est dans son bureau”)
- Participation: Observe each student’s engagement during peer activities and group discussions.
Peer Review
- Feedback Exchange: Learners exchange notebooks or oral presentations and use a checklist to review:
- Was the school name included?
- Are there at least 5 complete sentences?
- Did they use at least 3 different vocabulary categories (rooms, objects, staff)?
- Did they use the verbs avoir, être, or activity verbs like manger, travailler correctly?
- Oral Feedback Phrases:
- “C’est bien, mais tu as oublié un verbe.”
- “Ton paragraphe est très clair !”
- “Tu peux dire ‘la salle de classe’ au lieu de ‘le salle’.”
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
- Fluency Focus: Prioritize natural flow of sentences over perfection. Encourage students to express their ideas confidently.
- Error Correction: Gently correct common mistakes, such as gender agreement (la directeur ❌ → le directeur ✅), missing articles, or incorrect verb conjugations.
- Vocabulary Variety: Encourage use of less common vocabulary like le terrain de sport, le jardin, or la salle informatique to enrich descriptions.
Assignment (Homework)
Task: Write a short paragraph (at least 5 sentences) describing your school using the vocabulary and verbs learned.
Instructions:
- Start with the name of your school.
- Mention how many classrooms it has.
- Describe some rooms (e.g., la bibliothèque, la cantine).
- Include at least one staff member (e.g., le professeur, le directeur).
- Use verbs like avoir, être, manger, travailler in your paragraph.
Example Homework Paragraph:
“Mon école s’appelle École Lumière. Elle a huit salles de classe. Il y a une bibliothèque et une salle informatique. Le directeur est gentil. Il travaille dans son bureau. J’aime mon professeur parce qu’il est intelligent.”
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Oral question – Describe your favorite room in French
• Follow-up Activity: Share written paragraphs with the class
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Use visuals and sentence starters
Pair slower learners with more confident peers
Provide additional oral practice for struggling students
Teacher’s Reflection:
• What worked well? Students engaged actively in review games and oral presentations
• What needs improvement? Allow more time for paragraph writing
• Students’ engagement level: ☑ High ☑ Medium ☐ Low
