• Flashcards
• School layout map

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• How many classrooms are there in your school?
• Introduce “avoir” for possession: “Mon école a trois salles de classe.”

Learner’s Role:
Respond orally, count classrooms, and recall numbers in French

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)

  1. Reintroduce the Verb “Avoir” (to have)
Begin by reminding students that “avoir” means “to have” in French.
Present its conjugation in the present tense for singular and plural pronouns:
  • J’ai – I have
  • Tu as – You have
  • Il/Elle a – He/She has
  • Nous avons – We have
  • Vous avez – You (plural/formal) have
  • Ils/Elles ont – They have

Write these clearly on the board and pronounce each aloud, having students repeat after you.

  1. Connect Conjugation to School Vocabulary
Demonstrate how “avoir” is used to describe what a school has.

Model sentences:

  • Mon école a un jardin. (My school has a garden.)
  • Nous avons trois salles de classe. (We have three classrooms.)
  • La bibliothèque a beaucoup de livres. (The library has many books.)
  • Mon école a une cantine et un bureau. (My school has a canteen and an office.)

Underline “a” (3rd person singular of avoir) and “ont” (3rd person plural) to show verb usage in context.

  1. Teach Number Agreement in Sentences
Review or teach basic French numbers (1 to 10 or up to 20 if possible). Emphasize correct number and noun agreement:

Examples:

  • un bureau (one office)
  • deux jardins (two gardens)
  • trois salles de classe (three classrooms)
  • quatre fenêtres (four windows)

Clarify that some nouns are feminine and need the article une, while others are masculine and use un.

  1. Interactive Demonstration & Counting Practice
  • Use flashcards or real classroom items to count aloud and describe using “avoir.”
  • Example: Show 3 chairs and say: “La salle de classe a trois chaises.”
  • Ask questions like: “Combien de fenêtres y a-t-il ?” and guide students to respond using “avoir.”
  1. Oral Sentence Building
Call learners individually or in pairs to describe their school:
  • “Mon école a ______.”
  • “Nous avons ______ dans notre école.”
  1. Written Sentence Practice
  • Learners write 3–5 descriptive sentences using “avoir” and vocabulary learned so far.
  • Provide sentence starters to guide them:
    • Mon école a __________.
    • Il y a __________ dans la cour.
    • Nous avons __________ dans la classe.
  1. Games and Number-Based Activities
  • Counting Game: Count and list items around the class (chairs, desks, windows, etc.)
  • Memory Matching Game: Match numbers with pictures and nouns (e.g., “5 + picture of books = cinq livres”)
  • Sentence Puzzle: Give sentence strips with mixed-up words and have students arrange them correctly.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Oral Conjugation Practice: Say the conjugation of avoir with the class and in small groups.
  • Sentence Formation: Write and speak full sentences about their school using avoir and numbers.
  • Number Review: Practice counting school objects in French.
  • Classroom Tour: Walk around or observe parts of the class/school and describe them using avoir.
  • Pair Work: Partner with a classmate to describe your school’s features using numbers.

Examples they may produce:

  • “Mon école a une bibliothèque.”
  • “Nous avons cinq classes.”
  • “La salle de classe a six fenêtres.”
  • “Le directeur a un bureau.”

Assessment Checks

  • Oral Questioning: Ask learners to say what their school has using avoir.
    • Example: “Qu’est-ce que ton école a ?”
    • Expected response: “Mon école a une salle informatique.”
  • Written Work: Check for:
    • Correct conjugation of avoir
    • Accurate number usage
    • Proper spelling and grammar
  • Sentence Dictation: Say a sentence aloud; learners write what they hear.

Peer Review

  • Pair Practice: Learners pair up and describe their school to one another using full sentences with avoir.
  • Peers listen and verify:
    • Is the sentence correct?
    • Is the number and noun agreement accurate?
    • Is the vocabulary used properly?

Example:

  • Student A: “Mon école a deux bibliothèques.”
  • Student B: “Bien joué !” or “Tu veux dire une bibliothèque ?”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Encourage full sentence formation—avoid one-word answers.
  • Emphasize correct number-noun agreement (un jardin / deux jardins).
  • Remind students about gendered nouns:
    • une bibliothèque (f)
    • un jardin (m)
  • Provide constant feedback on pronunciation and sentence clarity.
  • For differentiated learners, provide sentence frames and visual aids.

Example Homework Sentences:

  2. Il y a une cantine dans mon école.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Number charts and visual aids
Sentence frames for support
Peer assistance during oral practice
