Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask: “Combien de frères as-tu ?”
Learner’s Role:
Respond orally, recall numbers, and family vocabulary.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
Introduce the verb avoir (to have) in present tense: j’ai (I have), tu as (you have), il/elle a (he/she has). Write the conjugations on the board and pronounce each clearly, emphasizing the liaison in “j’ai.” Explain that avoir is used to talk about possession or to say how many family members one has. Model example sentences such as “J’ai deux frères” (I have two brothers) and “Tu as une sœur” (You have one sister). Use visual aids like sentence strips with missing words for learners to fill in, reinforcing the verb structure and number agreement. Provide manipulatives such as counters or pictures representing family members to support counting activities. Guide learners through oral repetition and written practice, demonstrating how to form sentences with numbers and family member vocabulary.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
Practice repeating the conjugations orally as a class and in pairs. Complete fill-in-the-blank sentence strips, for example, “J’ai ___ sœur(s).” Use manipulatives to count and describe the number of siblings or family members they have. Role-play conversations where one learner asks, “Tu as combien de frères?” and the partner responds correctly using “J’ai…” or “Tu as…” plus the number and family member. Write simple sentences using “j’ai” or “tu as” to describe family counts.
Assessment Checks
Observe learners during oral practice and role-play for correct verb use and sentence fluency. Check written sentences for proper verb conjugation, number agreement, and sentence structure.
Peer Review
Pair learners to quiz each other on how many siblings or family members they have. Partners listen and correct each other’s sentence formation and pronunciation.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Emphasize the agreement between numbers and nouns (singular/plural). Use real objects or pictures as counting aids to support understanding. Encourage learners to speak in full sentences rather than short phrases.
Assignment (Homework)
Write five sentences describing the number of siblings or family members you have using “j’ai” and “tu as.” For example, “J’ai une sœur,” “Tu as deux frères.” Encourage learners to use numbers and family member vocabulary learned in class.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Write “I have 1 sister” in French.
• Follow-up Activity: Oral practice in pairs.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide number charts for learners needing support; allow oral responses for weaker writers.
Teacher’s Reflection:
• What worked well? Counting and conjugation exercises.
• What needs improvement? More practice with plural forms.
• Students’ engagement level: ☑ High ☑ Medium ☐ Low
