Teacher’s Name:
Subject: General Science
Grade Level: Grade 3
Date: Week 11
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 11, Period 2
Topic: Human Reproduction and Puberty
Sub-topic: Understanding Human Reproduction (Part 2)

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
explain the steps in reproduction: ovulation, fertilization, conception, pregnancy, and delivery of the baby.
discuss circumstances for having a baby and the right time to have one.
explain ways pregnancy can be avoided.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Puberty involves changes that make reproduction possible. Boys and girls have reproductive organs.

Instructional Materials
Diagrams of human reproductive system, chart showing reproduction steps, worksheets, flashcards.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners how babies are born. Discuss the general idea that adults reproduce and that reproduction involves steps.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Learners observe diagrams or age-appropriate models of male and female reproductive systems.
  • Students identify and sequence the steps in human reproduction:
  1. Ovulation – release of an egg from the ovary
  2. Fertilization – sperm meets egg
  3. Conception – implantation of fertilized egg in the uterus
  4. Pregnancy – development of the baby inside the womb
  5. Delivery – birth of the baby
  • Learners discuss in pairs or groups the right time for having a baby, considering physical, emotional, and social readiness.
  • Teacher explains age-appropriate ways pregnancy can be avoided, emphasizing responsible decisions, parental guidance, and education without including explicit sexual content.
  • Optional activity: learners create a simple flowchart or timeline showing the steps of reproduction in order.

Assessment Checks (Expanded):

  • Ask learners to describe the steps of reproduction in order using diagrams or flowcharts.
  • Ask learners to explain why waiting for the right time to have a baby is important, highlighting readiness and responsibilities.
  • Check understanding of safe practices to prevent pregnancy in age-appropriate language, ensuring learners grasp the concept of responsibility and education.
  • Observe participation during discussions to ensure learners can articulate key concepts without embarrassment.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Human reproduction involves several steps:
    • Ovulation: the female ovary releases an egg.
    • Fertilization: sperm meets the egg, usually in the fallopian tube.
    • Conception: the fertilized egg implants in the uterus.
    • Pregnancy: the baby develops over approximately nine months.
    • Delivery: the baby is born.
  • Timing for having a baby should consider physical, emotional, and social readiness; it is not just about biology.
  • Avoiding pregnancy involves making responsible decisions, seeking education, and guidance from parents or trusted adults.
  • Emphasize that these topics are part of learning about healthy growth and development, and learners should feel comfortable asking questions in a respectful environment.
  • Encourage learners to use diagrams, charts, and discussions to reinforce understanding and sequence the steps accurately.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:
Recap the reproduction steps and the importance of timing. Reinforce that responsible decisions are needed to prevent early pregnancy.

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Learners list the five steps of reproduction and explain why timing is important.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded)
Draw and label a simple diagram showing the steps of human reproduction.

Follow-up Activity
Discuss in groups how families and adults plan for having children responsibly.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Use diagrams and visual aids for learners who struggle with reading. Pair learners for discussion and peer learning. Provide simplified language and check understanding frequently.
