Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 19, Period 4
Topic: Plant Catalog and Uses
Sub-topic: Identifying Local Plants and Their Uses

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
make a catalog of some local plants.
explain some ways these plants are used (food, medicine, clothing, building materials, grooming, skin care, ornaments).

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Plants grow in the local environment. Some plants are edible and some are used for other purposes.

Instructional Materials
Local plant samples, pictures of plants, notebooks for cataloging, chart paper, markers.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners to name plants they see around their homes or school and discuss how they use them.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Learners examine real plant samples from the school garden or local environment, or observe pictures of local plants.
  • Students create a catalog by listing each plant’s name and drawing or pasting pictures into their notebooks.
  • Learners discuss in pairs or groups the different uses of each plant, such as:
    • Food – cassava, plantain, mango
    • Medicine – neem leaves, moringa, aloe vera
    • Clothing/Materials – raffia palm, cotton
    • Grooming/Skin Care – shea butter, coconut oil
    • Ornaments – flowers, leaves, seeds for decoration
  • Optional activity: learners present one plant and its uses to the class, explaining why it is important.

Assessment Checks (Expanded):

  • Ask learners to name three plants and explain one use for each.
  • Check the completeness and accuracy of each learner’s catalog, ensuring names, drawings, or pictures and uses are correctly recorded.
  • Observe participation during discussions and presentations to ensure learners understand the different uses of plants.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Local plants have a variety of uses that support daily life, including:
    • Food – fruits, vegetables, roots, and seeds
    • Medicinal – treating minor illnesses or promoting health
    • Clothing and building materials – fibers, leaves, wood
    • Grooming and skin care – oils, creams, soaps
    • Ornaments and decorations – flowers, leaves, seeds
  • Cataloging plants helps learners:
    • Appreciate their environment
    • Recognize the value of biodiversity
    • Encourage responsible and sustainable use of natural resources
  • Encourage learners to observe plants at home or in the community and note their uses to strengthen real-life connections.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:
Recap the importance of local plants and their uses. Reinforce how a plant catalog can help in identifying and using plants responsibly.

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Learners list two plants and one use for each.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded)
Add five more local plants to the catalog at home, including their uses.

Follow-up Activity
Organize a class plant exhibition showing the catalog and real samples of plants.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide visual aids and labeled plant pictures. Pair learners for cataloging tasks. Offer simplified explanations for learners who need support in writing or drawing.
