Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 2, Period 1
Topic: Advanced Subtraction and Inequality Symbols
Sub-topic: Subtraction with Regrouping; >, <, =
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Subtract two-digit numerals using regrouping
Identify and use the symbols >, <, =
Previous Knowledge
Students already know subtraction without borrowing and can compare small groups of objects.
Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook, base-10 blocks, symbol flashcards, charts.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher places two sets of sticks on the desk and asks: Which group is greater? Learners respond.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher explains subtraction with regrouping (borrowing). Example:
52
−37
Regroup: take 1 ten from 5 tens to make 12 ones. Then 12 − 7 = 5. Next 4 − 3 = 1. Answer = 15.
Teacher defines symbols: > means greater than, < means less than, = means equal to.
Examples: 45 > 29, 16 < 28, 50 = 50.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Learners use base-10 blocks to practice subtraction with regrouping.
Learners complete exercises comparing numbers with >, <, =.
Learners solve word problems on regrouping subtraction.
Assessment Checks:
Solve 83 − 47, 62 __ 59.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Borrowing is taking from the next place value to solve subtraction. The symbols >, <, = are used to compare numbers.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher emphasizes regrouping steps and symbol meanings.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip: Solve 74 − 28 and fill in 34 __ 34. Teacher provides feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Solve 95 − 67, 48 __ 52.
Follow-up Activity:
Learners compare numbers at home using calendars or money values.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Teacher uses base-10 materials and peer support for struggling learners.
