Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks: “If you eat 1⁄6 of a cake and your friend eats 2⁄6, how much of the cake has been eaten in total?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Like fractions are fractions with the same denominators. To add like fractions, add the numerators and keep the denominator. Example: 2⁄5 + 1⁄5 = 3⁄5. To subtract like fractions, subtract the numerators and keep the denominator. Example: 5⁄8 – 3⁄8 = 2⁄8 = ¼. Word problems can also involve like fractions. Example: Jane drank 2⁄7 of a jug of milk in the morning and 3⁄7 in the afternoon. Altogether, she drank 5⁄7 of the jug.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Students solve practice problems adding and subtracting fractions on the board. They use real objects like fruit slices to act out fraction addition and subtraction. They solve word problems in pairs.

Assessment Checks:
Add: 3⁄9 + 4⁄9.
Subtract: 7⁄10 – 2⁄10.
Solve: A boy ate 1⁄8 of a pizza in the morning and 5⁄8 in the evening. How much did he eat in total?

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Like fractions have the same denominators. When adding or subtracting, only the numerators change. Answers should be simplified where possible.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: To add like fractions, add numerators. To subtract, subtract numerators. Denominators stay the same. Word problems can also use like fractions.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Add 2⁄6 + 3⁄6. Subtract 9⁄12 – 5⁄12.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Write 2 word problems involving subtraction of like fractions and solve them.

Follow-up Activity:
Students will draw fraction bars at home to represent addition and subtraction.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide step-by-step guides for learners who struggle. Give more complex fraction sums to advanced learners.
