Week & Period: Week 28, Period 5
Topic: Measurement
Sub-topic: Time and Money
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
• Tell time using analog and digital clocks
• Add and subtract time intervals
• Perform operations with Liberian currency (LD)
Previous Knowledge
Students already know how to count numbers and do basic addition and subtraction.
Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook for Grade 3, wall clock, wristwatch, play money or real coins.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks learners: “What time did you wake up today? How much is your lunch money?” Learners respond.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Time: We use clocks to read time. Analog clocks have hour and minute hands. Digital clocks show time with numbers.
Examples:
• 3:00 = 3 o’clock
• 3:30 = half past 3
• 3:15 = quarter past 3
Operations with time:
If a class starts at 8:00 and ends at 10:00, duration = 2 hours.
Money: Liberian currency (LD) includes notes and coins.
Operations with money:
• 50 LD + 25 LD = 75 LD
• 100 LD − 40 LD = 60 LD
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Learners practice reading different times on clocks.
• Learners solve word problems with adding/subtracting time.
• Learners use play money to buy and sell objects.
Assessment Checks:
• Teacher asks: What time is shown on the clock?
• Teacher asks: If you have 50 LD and buy bread for 35 LD, how much is left?
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
We measure time in hours and minutes. Money is used for trade and daily activities. Time and money operations help in solving daily-life problems.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Time tells us when events happen. Money allows us to buy and sell things. We can perform operations with both.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write the time shown by the teacher and solve one money problem.
Assignment (Expanded):
Write three activities you do daily and their times. Calculate total time.
Follow-up Activity:
At home, ask prices of 3 items from a shop and add them.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Teacher provides extra practice for learners struggling with clocks. Peer tutoring is encouraged.
