Topic: Review of Basic Operations
Sub-topic: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Add one- and two-digit numerals
Subtract one- and two-digit numerals
Add two-digit numerals with and without regrouping
Multiply one- and two-digit numerals
Previous Knowledge
Students already know simple counting, grouping, and how to identify numbers up to 100.
Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook for Grade 3, real objects (sticks, stones, bottles), number line chart, flashcards.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks learners to count objects in the classroom such as books or pencils. Learners solve quick oral drills: 3 + 5, 9 − 4, 2 × 3.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher defines addition as putting numbers or objects together to find the total. Example: 23 + 16 = 39.
Teacher defines subtraction as taking away or finding the difference between numbers. Example: 54 − 28 = 26.
Teacher defines multiplication as repeated addition. Example: 4 × 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
Teacher shows vertical and horizontal arrangements:
Horizontal: 25 + 34 = 59
Vertical:
25
+34
59
Teacher introduces word problems: A boy has 12 oranges. His friend gives him 8 more. How many does he have now?
Teacher uses arrays for multiplication: 3 × 4 = 3 groups of 4.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Learners solve addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems using objects.
Learners draw arrays to show multiplication as repeated addition.
Learners practice solving simple word problems in groups.
Assessment Checks:
Solve 46 + 27, 92 − 48, 6 × 7.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Addition uses the plus sign (+). Subtraction uses the minus sign (−). Multiplication uses the times sign (×). These are the three basic operations of arithmetic.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher reviews definitions and examples of the three operations.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Learners solve one addition, one subtraction, and one multiplication problem. Teacher collects and gives oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Solve: 32 + 45, 76 − 28, 5 × 9.
Follow-up Activity:
Learners at home count and add or subtract objects like pencils or fruits.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Teacher pairs stronger learners with weaker ones and uses real objects for clarity.
