Topic: Definition of Physical Education and Health
Sub-topic: Physical Education and Health
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Define Physical Education (PE) and Health. Explain the importance of PE and health in daily life. Identify examples of activities that promote health and physical fitness.
Previous Knowledge
Students already know basic body movements such as walking, running, hopping, and stretching.
Instructional Materials
Charts showing PE activities, mats, cones, posters, open space for movement.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher leads learners in light jogging and stretching. Learners are asked: “What activities do you do to keep your body healthy?” Discussion links learners’ experiences to the importance of PE and health.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher defines Physical Education (PE) as organized activities designed to improve physical fitness, develop motor skills, and promote overall health and well-being. Health is explained as the state of being free from illness and maintaining mental, physical, and social well-being. Teacher provides examples of activities that promote health: running, stretching, jumping, balanced nutrition, and proper sleep. Demonstrations include walking with good posture, basic stretching for arms and legs, and hopping or skipping to increase heart rate. Teacher explains how these activities improve endurance, strength, flexibility, and coordination, linking each exercise to its health benefit.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Learners perform walking, stretching, hopping, and basic exercises demonstrated by the teacher. Learners reflect on how each activity makes them feel physically and mentally. Learners observe peers, provide feedback on posture and effort, and discuss how these exercises can be done at home to stay healthy. Learners are encouraged to identify which exercise they enjoy most and explain why.
Assessment Checks:
Teacher asks learners to define Physical Education and health in their own words. Teacher observes learners’ participation, effort, and understanding of the benefits of each activity. Teacher asks learners to give one example of an activity that promotes health and explain how it helps the body.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Physical Education develops strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and confidence. Health involves regular exercise, hygiene, proper nutrition, and adequate rest. Linking exercises to health outcomes helps learners understand why PE is important. Simple activities like stretching, hopping, and walking are effective for all learners and can be practiced daily. Observing peers and providing feedback fosters teamwork and attention to detail.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Learners share one activity they enjoy that promotes health and explain why it is beneficial. Teacher reviews the definitions of PE and health and emphasizes the link between activity and well-being.
Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Learners write one definition of PE and one activity that promotes health. Teacher collects slips and provides oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded)
Learners practice one exercise at home and note how it makes them feel physically.
Follow-up Activity
Next lesson will focus on the importance and history of Physical Education, including benefits and development in schools.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Learners with limited mobility perform modified exercises. Peer support ensures inclusivity and safe participation.
