Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 3
Date: Week 7
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 7, Period 2
Topic: Introduction to Physical Fitness & Measuring Height and Weight
Sub-topic: Physical Fitness and Basic Anthropometric Measurements

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Define physical fitness. Explain why physical fitness is important. Demonstrate how to measure height and weight safely and accurately.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know basic exercises and activities that promote physical fitness, such as walking, running, stretching, and hopping.

Instructional Materials
Measuring tape, weighing scale, mats, cones, charts showing exercises and measurement steps.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher leads learners in light jogging and dynamic stretches. Learners are asked: “Why is it important to know if we are fit?” and “Have you ever measured your height or weight?” Learners share experiences and expectations.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher Input (Expanded & Detailed):

  1. Introduction & Definition:
  • Teacher defines physical fitness as the ability of a person to carry out daily activities with energy, strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance, without feeling overly tired.
  • Emphasize that being physically fit helps the body, heart, and overall health, enabling children to play, study, and perform daily tasks easily.
  • Explain that fitness includes four main components:
    • Strength: The ability of muscles to work hard. Example: lifting a bag of school books or climbing stairs.
    • Endurance: Ability to keep doing activities for a long time. Example: running around the playground without getting tired.
    • Flexibility: Ability to move joints freely. Example: touching toes or stretching arms.
    • Coordination & Balance: Ability to move smoothly and maintain stability. Example: hopping on one foot or catching a ball.
  1. Importance of Physical Fitness:
  • Teacher explains benefits:
    • Body: Strong muscles, healthy bones, good posture.
    • Heart & Lungs: Improves circulation and breathing.
    • Overall Health: Reduces the risk of sickness, improves energy, and helps maintain a healthy weight.
  • Give relatable examples: “A student who exercises regularly can run faster during games, climb stairs without getting tired, and feel more energetic in class.”
  1. Demonstration of Measuring Height and Weight:
  • Height:
    • Show learners how to use a measuring tape or meter rule.
    • Demonstrate correct posture: stand straight, heels together, head level, looking forward.
    • Teacher models measuring a volunteer.
  • Weight:
    • Show learners how to use a weighing scale safely.
    • Explain importance of reading the scale at eye level and recording results accurately.
  • Explain the purpose: tracking growth, monitoring fitness, and observing changes over time.
  1. Practical Activity – Measuring & Recording:
  • Learners work in pairs to measure each other’s height and weight.
  • Teacher circulates, providing guidance on:
    • Maintaining correct posture while measuring.
    • Reading and recording results accurately.
  • Recording & Interpreting Results:
    • Learners enter data into a simple table with columns for name, height, weight, and observations.
    • Discuss: “Who is tallest? Who weighs the most? What do these numbers tell us about our growth and fitness?”
  1. Testing Fitness Components:
  • Learners perform simple exercises to observe strength, endurance, and flexibility:
    • Strength: Push-ups, wall-sits, or lifting a light object.
    • Endurance: Short running laps or skipping rope.
    • Flexibility: Touching toes, stretching arms overhead, side bends.
  • Teacher explains how each exercise tests a part of fitness and encourages learners to record their observations.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Perform exercises testing strength, endurance, and flexibility.
  • Measure height and weight of partners using proper techniques.
  • Record results in tables and compare differences between boys and girls or among peers.
  • Discuss observations in small groups:
    • “What does this tell us about our fitness?”
    • “Which exercises could help improve our strength or endurance?”
  • Reflect on the connection between fitness exercises and growth measurements.

Assessment Checks (Expanded):

  • Observation: Teacher monitors learners measuring height and weight accurately, maintaining correct posture, and following safety procedures.
  • Oral Questions:
    • “Why is measuring height and weight important?”
    • “How can we use these results to improve our fitness?”
    • “Which exercise helps improve flexibility?”
  • Practical Assessment: Check learners performing exercises correctly, recording results neatly, and interpreting their data logically.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Physical fitness is a combination of strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
  • Measuring height and weight helps monitor growth, health, and fitness trends.
  • Demonstrations, guided practice, and peer work ensure learners understand correct techniques, maintain safety, and record data accurately.
  • Reflection discussions encourage learners to connect measurements with exercises and understand how fitness activities impact their growth and health.
  • Teachers should emphasize daily practice of exercises and periodic measurement to track progress over time.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Learners share one thing they learned about physical fitness and how to measure height or weight. Teacher emphasizes safe participation, accuracy in measurement, and understanding fitness results.

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Learners write the definition of physical fitness and one reason why measuring height and weight is important. Teacher collects slips and provides oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded)
Learners measure their height and weight at home (with adult supervision) and note any changes over a week.

Follow-up Activity
Next lesson will cover assessment of physical fitness of boys and girls, including strength, flexibility, and endurance tests.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Learners with mobility limitations perform modified exercises and assist peers in measurements. Peer support ensures inclusion and safety.
